Phil Jackson Contacted by the Cleveland Cavaliers for Coaching Job

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

For what it’s worth, Mike Brown remains the front-runner to take over the bench in Cleveland. The Cavaliers reportedly met with Brown about the gig over the weekend.

A much bigger fish is out there for the Cavs — owner Dan Gilbert is said to be interested in bringing Phil Jackson on board.

According to ESPN, the Cavaliers have reached out to the Zen Master to gauge his interest:

As they did eight years ago when he was in retirement, the Cleveland Cavaliers have reached out to Phil Jackson about their head coach opening, sources said. [...] Jackson interviewed with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert in 2005, when Gilbert was looking for a coach.

That year, Gilbert ended up hiring Mike Brown. Brown and the Cavs have mutual interest in a reunion. Gilbert and Brown met over dinner Sunday night, a league source confirmed.

Needless to say, it would be the shocker of all shockers if the Cleveland Cavaliers somehow landed Phil Jackson.

It has been reported that Jackson wants to get back into the NBA, but all indications are that he’s looking for a powerful front-office position. Of course, that won’t stop teams from reaching out to him for their coaching vacancies — potential suitors being the Brooklyn Nets and Seattle, should the Kings relocate.

If he takes that job I could see Lebron and others wanting to come there and play with Kyrie

    No way in the world.

Why would you make this story a sticky?

No one cares & finds it a joke.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange nearly pulled a muscle from laughing so hard at this headline.

I’m curious, what Phil could achive with a young, talented team – but without any of the best players of all time for once. I’ll probably never find out.

If you were the top high school prospect, would you go to the best college that was the best fit for your style, and that could gave you the best chance to win? Or would you go to the team that could possibly have potential? Of course you will never find out, why would he ever do that, his resume is too good.

I tweeted Kate Upton asking for a date, too.

I don’t know what you’re trying to say there but sometimes people like different experiences. If I was a coach and I had won a bunch of rings I would embrace the challenge of coaching a young team.

  • S.Rojas

wouldn’t want to coach the cavs.

  • JML-G

lol all kind of big city, huge budget teams have contacted him and he said no – now suddenly worst city in the America with awful team (sorry, Kyrie isnt enought for me to call it even a decent team and he will be gone the same as Bron) thinks Phil Jackson will coach them

There is no way Jackson would do this, it would expose him as the overrated coach that he is.

  • RedRum

well… he did manage to get his team to the playoffs twice with Smush Parker running the point and kwame at center

  • Ugh

    A) Name a coach who makes better in game adjustments.
    B) Name a coach who makes better between game adjustments.
    C) Name a coach who gets role-players more dedicated to their jobs.
    D) Name a coach with more rings.

Then explain overrated to me again.

everything says pjax will be LAL coach next year or in the front office of a team he can take all the credit for if success occurs.

    Is DgILBERt deliriOUS?

  • danpowers

i wouldnt call him overrated. he is just a good fit for high talent teams and knows how to deal with difficult characters. that r the strenghts that rlly make him special. there r really few out there who r capable of that. we all dont know if he would do well with inferior talent but i doubt that he would be a total bust.
