Greg Oden to Reportedly be Cleared For 5-On-5 Soon, Could Play During Preseason

Greg Oden back? Almost! According to ESPN, the big man will be cleared for 5-on-5 at some point soon, and may play during a preseason game or two as well: “Greg Oden is likely to be cleared for full practice work with the Miami Heat next week and could see his first NBA action in four years during one of their final preseason games, sources told ESPN.com on Saturday. Oden last played in a game with the Trail Blazers in 2009, when he sustained his second season-ending knee injury since Portland selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft. The Heat, who signed Oden to a one-year contract this past summer hoping to salvage his career, have been encouraged by his development in recent days. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra won’t rule out playing Oden in at least one of the team’s five remaining preseason games if the 7-foot center avoids any setbacks or recurring swelling in his knees, which have endured multiple surgeries the past five years. Oden was quietly cleared for more physically demanding contact work in Miami’s practices earlier this week. He completed another extensive workout on the court Friday before the Heat’s preseason win over Charlotte in a neutral-site game played in Kansas City. ‘The next step for me now is just doing some five-on-five work and just getting out there,’ Oden told ESPN.com. ‘Every little step for me, I just get excited. I just want to get out there and do more and more, get my wind back, get my legs back under me. I’m hoping in the next couple of weeks I’ll be able to get a couple of minutes out there.’”

time to prove the doubters and haters wrong

“recurring swelling in his knees” doesn’t sound like he’s going to be racking up serious minutes in the foreseeable future.

if this project works out. Lebron Oden Bosh Beasley is going to be a crazy core.

the cups half full the cups half full

  • Dagger

According to the article, he’s not suffering from that now. Instead, he’s looking to avoid it.

Like everyone else, I hope for the best for Oden, although I fear that he’ll experience the same fate as his former teammate, Brandon Roy. A positive attitude can only do so much when the body breaks down.

This is the Heat’s major off-season signing? The Kang needs a raise. Management is relying on The Kang to figure things out but everyone wants to share the credit.

not like Heat needed any major changes this summer…

They need to shore up that hole in the middle. Their lack of size was exploited by Hibbert and the Pacers – they made Hibbert look like Abdul-Jabbar out there. They still get outrebounded by bigger teams and they can’t easy baskets inside during crunch time.

The Pacers, Bulls and Nets will pound the Heat inside.

You know how excited you are after having a month or 2 away from the game? Imagine 3 years away from the league!!! the butterflies this man will experience before that first game will be something for sure.

Bosh said he’ll step up. :P

I really really hope Greg and his knees can grasp this chance. Tell them you are not done yet, make a statement for yourself!

  • christianbullen

The shockexchange said he would date Lola Fapper.

  • shockexchange

@christianbullen, Exactly! And look how that turned out. *Welp*

  • Solito

For right now, he continues playing 5 on 1… But all jokes aside, I am rooting for the guy. How can you not?!

  • pepper my angus

  • Mike Gilbert

I’m sure they’ll sign Lamar Odom too

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

No. It’s better if he recovers from his affliction.
