NBAers React to New Offer

A #tweetcap.

Another week, another offer from the NBA that the players’ union may or may not accept. The owners have, according to reports, offered to bump up the minimum payroll for each team (which currently says teams have to spend at least 75 percent of the salary cap each season), and Commissioner David Stern said the proposal includes a 72-game season that would start on December 15. Of course, there’s still the issue of the mysterious, mythical and maddening “BRI,” or basketball-related income, on which union leaders have apparently agreed to settle at 50-50 for the first time since labor talks began. After the negotiation session ended last night and it was announced that the “last, best offer” was on the table, NBAers of all sorts hit Twitter with their reactions. Roll through the gallery above to check ‘em out.

What Shannon said was pretty insightful. We know Deron Williams isn’t gunna be happy until he gets his 53% LOL

What’s extra depressing about the picture of Hunter on the homepage with the Phoenix all-star logo in the background is that I was at that press conference, and if I remember correctly, it was pretty much entirely a discussion of all the same topics being discussed now. THAT WAS IN FEBRUARY OF 2009. Shoot me.

Shane Battier and Nazr Muhammed for NBAPA representatives.

TJ Ford putting lives in parentheses? You make millions regardles of 53% or 50%. Your family is fine. Thousands of people that work at the stadiums are kept out of work because of this greed. No one feels sorry for you!

TJ Ford would know a thing or two about small-market teams losing. They seem to do that when he and his ridiculous contract are around. I don’t even know who to be pissed off at any more. I started off being upset with the players since the league they play in does actually belong to the owners and the owners have a right to bargain for terms more suitable to their wishes. Then I flip-flopped and got pissed at the owners when it seemed that the players were making concessions to get a deal done and the owners balked at each concession as if the only thing that would make them happy is the players playing for free. This is driving me nuts. By the time they get it all sorted out, I’m going to hate the players and the owners and the only ball I’ll want to watch is Blue Chips.

The union should have come into negotiations demanding 75%. Then the socalled ‘compromises’ would have been real compromises, instead of just player giveaways. Now what needs to happen is that the players need to decertify the union and then reset negotiations, starting their BRI demands at 75%. That way, socalled compromises will be real compromises, instead of just player giveaways. What went wrong before is that both the owners and the union came in with lowball offers, which meant that the players were doomed from the start. They need to reset and start really fighting.

@sean phee – Those are “inverted commas” not (parentheses) and you misread his point.
Shannon Brown had the best quote out of those, though.

the proposal aint great..i get it but i dont see stern come off this ….and it is a soft cap with the bird exemption…take the deal and lets ball. i want kobe on xmas…sorry!

besides Dirk and maybe Scola all the players who commenten in here are ok to bad nba players. wouldn’t it be funny if .the owners get the hard cap and KD Dwight and CP3 sign for like 80 mil to play together and get the rest out of endorsements since winning in a big market = a lot of money If they decertify and lose they’ll lose the entire season and get a deal that’ll never even come close to 50% for the players.

  • dubya4lyfe

Enough with this nonsense. It’s time for the players to compromise. Let us all enjoy some basketball while you pull in your million $ salaries.

LOL Villanueva would come off the bench for Andre Drummond at UConn if they let him play.

Loved what Shannon had to say – very true. Lot of respect for him, better than the legions of “smh” post. Also, Marshon Brooks is annoying as f**k, and has been ever since these tweet caps have been posted on SLAM. Thought I’d like the kid, but he just sounds so immature on every single Tweet he makes.

loool at matic. can’t believe babcock used our first round pick on Charlie?

Tj ford talking about good team chemistry is like Lindsay lohan talking about family values.
