Stephon Marbury Leads Beijing Ducks to Chinese League Title

Stephon Marbury is a champion…in China. Starbury, who’s become a huge sensation in the Chinese Basketball Association after reinventing himself as an accessible man of the people halfway across the world from where he once starred in the NBA, led the Beijing Ducks to their first CBA League title in franchise history, after scoring a game-high 41 points to seal a 4-1 series victory over fellow American Aaron Brooks’ team.

From China Daily:

Beijing Ducks, led by former NBA star Stephon Marbury who notched game-high 41 points on Friday night, clinched their first-ever title of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league.

Edging defending champions Guangdong Hongyuan 124-121 at home, Beijing Ducks, who entered the finals for the first time, won 4-1 on aggregate in the best-of-seven series. Guangdong had been crowned seven times in the past eight seasons.

With the breathtaking victory, Beijing Ducks became the fourth CBA title holder in 17 years, following eight-time winners Bayi Rockets, Shanghai Sharks and Guangdong Hongyuan.

“I still can’t believe we won the title and I need some time to accept the fact. Before the new season was launched, the team had been confident in playing better, but it’s been a mere dream to win the title for us,” Beijing coach Min Lulei said after the tough duel.

Marbury, who had never played in NBA or CBA finals before the year 2012, vowed to win a league title when he came to China three years ago. His dream also came true tonight.

Marbury was again the man of the match, chipping in 41 points, three rebounds and seven assists while teenager Zhai Xiaochuan added 22 points. Beijing’s another foreign player Randolph Morris was not on fire from the field but his consistent free throw gifted him 14 points.

The main threat to Beijing tonight came from Aaron Brooks, also a former NBA star, who collected 33 points, four rebounds and five assists for the visitors while James Singleton added 29 points and nine rebounds.

Congrats, Steph.

@red – Marbury was always a beast, he was just a different type of guy. china is the best thing that could have ever happened to him AS A PERSON. he already made 100 million in the nba and was a top flight player for a few seasons. now he got to win, get buckets and do it his way. if you were a real player you would know thats the trifecta as far as ball goes. high school legend, college star, streetball legend, nba all-star and international champion and hero. not many players can claim all of those……..and 100 million!!!! hahah

    @Red: Well, it’s my opinion that your’e a douchebag.

Very happy for Steph. While I don’t think he always handle things the right way, he got a raw deal that last year in NY. He seems to have matured and I believe him when he says he’s not thinking about the NBA. Chine absolutely loves him and I think he loves them back.

-Mas- he regularly tweets pics of himself riding the train in China.

I get what you mean @real, I agree with that. @Shado, so you’re saying you never critique ball players other than their work on the court? LOL, high horse? WTF I’m not sitting here saying I’m better than Marbury how am I having a ego lol. @Ronald, it’s my opinion you can’t spell & are a douchebag for not respecting an opinion on a COMMENT BOARD.

Lol, I don’t quite mind, my moms raised me stressing humility & modesty. Ignorance is the curse of God, knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven. -William Shakespeare. LOL I don’t take offense, but I’m pretty sure 3rd grade spelling counts for something. YOLO

  • l2ising Phoenix

Is it that this article is written in Chinese/mandarin with the translation to english making it so… amusingly skewed?

  • Harlem_World

Happy for him! NYC all day, everyday! There’s alot of players who haven’t made anywhere near the impact he has in China who are either back in the League or will soon be. Respect what he’s done with his ‘second chance’. It’s a great story and I know for one, I’m happy for him and his family.

  • RickyRude

Happy for him. Man believed in himself when no one else did. Gotta respect that. He achieved what he set out to do. Many of us should learn from that instead of criticizing.

  • kevin Y

Can’t believe he had such bad reputation in the past in US. In China he seems a perfect person and a role model as professional basketball play. Has he changed so much after coming to China, or he was just treated unfairly in the past?

I am a Chinese from Beijing, and really admire Marbury and thank him for winning the first CBA Champion for Beijing.

I’m a chinese and I really like Marbury, he leads Beijing to beat the “celtics”, the Tyrant of Chinese Basketball Assciation, so great, you have to know Steve’s opppnent won 7 championships in last 8 years and they collect lots of national team’s player. It can’t be too much praise for Steve!

  • b dizzle

I, for one, am happy for marbury. always been a fan n regardless of where u play, the game’s still the same so much respect

  • AiRsMiTh

If you think this comment is too long and don’t want to read it, then don’t, but don’t complain about it. Starbury was before my time, I never really watched him in even when he was on his way out of NY and the NBA. But there are so many negative comments it seems about him winning a championship. People are hating him still and talk about how they’re different from the people praising him, saying they’re not into the media or pop culture like everyone else is or something, but from what I have learned about Stephon, he has always been an UNpopular guy. I think people are just bitter and can’t at least be happy for the guy, because he plays in the CBA and not the NBA. They can’t seem acknowledge how much he has had to grow in order to accomplish this. And I feel like there is some disrespect towards Chinese players in the comments here too. Basketball hasn’t been as huge over there as it has been here up until the past decade or so. The game of basketball is still so undeveloped in other parts of the world, and I don’t think it has anything to do with these players being by default inferior to American players. I hope Marbury continues to do well, both on the court, and off and continues to help pave the way for the evolution of foreign players games’. He is I think a good, and unprecedented ambassador for the game in China, so nothing but respect. I wish him continued success.
