Bynum Wants Yao in Round 2

by Marcel Mutoni

Typically, NBA players refuse to tell reporters which opponent they’d like to go up against in the postseason. To which the Lakers’ Andrew Bynum says, to hell with all that!

Bynum, currently enjoying a few days off with his teammates prior to the start of Round Two, has a rooting interest in the Rockets/Blazers series. He wants Houston to win, so that he can go mano-e-mano with Yao Ming.

The Press-Enterprise jotted down Bynum’s wishes for the next round:

Andrew Bynum had just mentioned for the third time how excited he is to face Houston’s Yao Ming in the second round when someone pointed out the Rockets still must win one more game to ensure that clash.

“Yes, but that’s who I’m thinking we’re going to play,” Bynum said, matter-of-factly. “They have two games to win one.”

“It makes me very hungry,” Bynum said. “I can’t wait to go out there against a challenging player like Yao Ming. I know I’m going to play better just because it’s a big guy I’m going to go up against.”

You know, that’s a lot of confidence for a dude who averaged a measly five points and three boards in the previous series (in which, by the way, he didn’t face anyone even remotely as imposing or good as Yao, and could barely get off the bench some games.)

Be careful what you wish for, Andrew, you might just get it.

Isn’t he only playing like 10 minutes a night now?

  • zabba

    Yao would school him.

Bynum will start next round against Rockets or Blazers. As a Laker fan, I would rather see Yao/Rockets too.

  • ron

bynum will average double-double against yao. you can bet your money on it.

  • three food items and their life together in South Jersey

“it makes me very hungry for quiznos”

  • Tavoris

Bynum way want Yao, but the Lakers wil find wing scoring kinda hard with Battier and Artest around. You oughta b rootin for the Blazers, young fella.

LAL HOU would/will be a good series, it’d be funny tho if Drew makes a difference – I’d be surprised

  • Harlem_World

Puhleeze – Bynum can’t see Yao with Shaq’s eyes.

    blazers are gonna succeed.

  • Phil B

Too bad he’ll get Przybilla and Oden.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    I’ll take that bet, Ron.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I hope he DOES get Pryzbilla and Oden, and they school him.

” I know I’m going to play better just because it’s a big guy I’m going to go up against”…what the hell does that mean? does he mean because Yao is bigger than him? Aren’t those the players that give him trouble?

  • Jake

Is everyone forgetting that the reason he averaged just 5 points,3 rebounds and 10 minutes a game in the last series is because he is just coming back from injury?Give the man a few weeks to get back into the swing of things.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Jake, that’s also the point, he’s talking like he’s at the top of his game, but he’s probably not close to 100%, so why say sometihng like that?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

and just great, von wafer went tmac and is out for the game due to back spasms…

  • Statik

“It makes me hungry”…theres an “eat the head” reference somewhere in there

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

Blazers are going to win.. and then in the lakers lockeroom while everyone looks gloomy, the song starts playing “you cant always get whatcha want.”

  • http://www.reacavsfans.com Anton

If Yao wins, Rhianna will not “eat” Bynum’s head.

  • http://www.okayplayer.com doyouwantmore

He just wants to be able to go home early and party.

  • Exec Eaze

I wanna see la vs hou too, cause as a laker fan i see portland putting a bigger problem. lakers gone handle the rockets

  • Michael

Everyone is acting like Yao is dominating in the playoffs. Last time I checked the dude was averaging like 15.7 and 7rbs. The Lakers gaurd Yao better than any team in the league and he has said as much. By the way Kobe average 29.5pts 7ast on 53% shooting in the 4 games against Houston this season all wins.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Michael, Yao isn’t exactly in a slump, portland just doubles him all the time, but LA doesnt double him as much. Agains LA this season he’s had had 16,10 and 6 and 19,17 and 3 and only had one “bad” game and that was back in Nov where he still shot well, just not enough attempts. All this was before Houston actually started trying to get him the ball 20 times a game. So he could dominate LA’s center if they keep playing him straight up. On top of that Bynum isn’t 100%…

  • Andrew Bynum

Shut Up! I’m gonna skool Yao! You’ll see!!!

  • tindore

obviously last series he couldnt get on the court he was called for a foul for anything, because he was playing a small PF in Boozer, and a guy named Jarron Collins known for his flopping…playing a similar player in size and low post play, like Yao it will be a very good match up, but also look for KB24 for to show Ron Ron who REALLY is the BEST PLAYER he’s played against, not B-Roy…LA in 5…maybe 4.

  • K-Nasty

Be careful what you wish for? LA dominated the Rocks all four times they played them this year. At least the Blazers might be able to steal a game or two.

  • Herfdawg

Why is everybody hating so much? He didn’t say he’d dominate Yao. He never said he was playing mean ball. All he said was he wanted to play against one of the best because he knew he’d get up for that. I’m just saying, ya’ll better stop with the HATE HATE HATE cause you sound ignorant.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

You’re right herf, when i first read it i thought he meant he’s going to play better (than yao)…but i reread it and he obviously just meant he’d do better against a true center…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

K nasty, the playoffs arent the same as the regular season. Houston also “dominated” Portland during the season, but it’s been more competitive in the playoffs…

  • thatsthetruthruth

BREAKING: Oden just picked up his fourth foul of the first quarter while subbing in from the bench in practice.

  • K-Nasty

Fair enough RV. I just think that four games of easy wins by LA shows us that maybe Houston just doesn’t match up as well with LA as the Blazers would. No go-to guy in the clutch like Portland has with Roy.

  • chazz michael michaels

bynum really really wants yao… in the butt!!! hahaha he like chinese wee-wee

  • Feng

    Yao > Bynum

  • sheedfan

Ghostface Pryzbilla will impose his will on Bynum. Oden is just waking up from a long 1st season nap and is about to get some respect in the L.
Blazers in 7 over Rockets…and 7 over Lakers.

  • sab

another non-story – the headline/reaction bears little relation to what he actually said. *sigh* i hate the media. i’d prefer to see houston-lakers though – Portland wouldn’t have enough to dethrone the Lakers in a series, especially with their inexperience…

  • http://www.blogs.myspace.com/orignadro Witness

    check the season series.
yao will dominate this young man.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i think it’s all about PT. if lakers play rockets, Bynum will have more guaranteed PT because he’s the only one on the team who is the best matchup against Yao; if it’s blazers, lakers don’t necessary need bynum as much against bill rusell’s dad and ghostface.
i root for the rockets, but i definitely agree that Blazers match up much better against Lakers. if only the blazers weren’t playing rockets, i’d root for them. they have a roster with lengthy athletes, a coach who emphasizes defense and discipline, and a very legit scorer/closer in Roy. this is the kind of team that gives Lakers problem, as evidence in regular season.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i dont know how anyone can pick the blazers over the lakers, if they face each other, given how they’re playing right now. Kobe can contain Roy himself. Gasol/Bynum are much more mobile than Yao and won’t be doubled. Houston pretty much had the right defensive game plan for them, holding them under 89 pts in 4 out of 5 games and LA can just do the same. Outlaw was on vacation, may be be back on the plane now, but probably still wont be back by then..

  • Brandon

Utah’s smaller (and quicker) front court gave Bynum fits. He’s not as mobile with his brace and he’s still showing signs of comming off of a MCL tear.

Stop the hate, all he said was he wanted to go against Yao, a true center, and one of- if not the best C in the league. If you can’t get up for that, you don’t belong in a playoff game and that was his point.

As for the matchup itself, I think Yao will win, but Bynum is pure gold on the paint when it comes to defending a team like Houston.

Houston still has to do one thing though, and that’s close a series. Somthing they have had lots of trouble with.

    That said, go Houston.

  • Phil B

people can pick the blazers because the lakers can’t win in portland, so the blazers only need to steal one game in LA. a tough task, no doubt, but they still match up way better than houston. of course, they match up terribly against houston, so they still need to get by them.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/christopher_sells-authorHV106.html chiqo

    wish granted.

  • Rob

idk y bynum thinks he’s any good. greg oden is much better defensively than bynum, also much stronger than bynum. yao is in a grove right now thts not the matchup tht will win the series tho. the lakers bench has to b shutdown. meaning odom, farmar and the machine must be made to look like fools for the rockets to pull it out. kobe will do his thing, its the players around him who have to be stopped. i forgot to mention gasol, but yao’s got him

  • Ahmed Anwer

the only way bynum is gonna average a double double against the great wall is if the league extend the foul limit to 10.

  • Coney Islander

He must have a fetish for being DOMINATED!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Let’s see if the Lakers make the same mistake of leaving Yao to go one on one with Bynum. Although he is a step-up from Ghostface.
Well done Rockets. Proud of the boys today.

  • Plasticman

    So many ignorant comments…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

it doesnt matter what Bynum wants, Yao will pwn him and end up with Gasol guarding him

  • niQ

in the end, bynum will just be letting gasol take yao..

  • truthteller

Bynum wants no part of yao!

  • Hou2008

Bynum is sounding more and more like Eric Dampier, who used to boast that he is the best center in the West. So, Yao and Shaq (who was with Maimi) schooled him game after game. Yao is a sportsman. But, Shaq would eventually belittle Dampier as Erica Dampier.

Angela Bynum has a nice ring to it.

  • MarsRock

Bynum Wants Yao? OK, u get YAO!

  • emman

front him bynum and yaull will win in 5 adelman is gonna be to braindead to have von wafer finish off games and hes gonna have ron and shane to close out games and the lakers will have the ability to get up into the rockets and turn them over due to the lack of penetration from the perimeter.adelman cant coach.

  • Richard

Bynum is dumb. The Great Wall will destroy him if Andrew guards Yao 1 on 1. More likely the Lakers will double or triple Yao even when he doesn’t have the ball like the Blazers did in the 1st round.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Anyone who has watched the rockets regularly this year knows two things:

    1. Yao dominates “big” centers who play him straight up(Bynum, Howard).

    2. Yao has trouble with smaller bigs who can shoot, front, and put the ball on the floor(Gasol, Boozer)

Phil Jackson knows this too. He also knows that Scola would have trouble gaurding Odom/Ariza on the perimiter. My point here is that for all his talk, Bynum will likely ride the pine for most of this series.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Also, don’t make Yao angry–Quoth the Vanilla Godzilla, about 2 weeks ago: “I want Yao.” RESULT: 24 points on 9/9 shooting in 26 minutes. Fast forward to today. Quoth Bynum: “I want Yao…and Quiznos…but not necessarily in that order.” RESULT: Most likely a smilar amount of Yao domination (until Jackso yanks him), plus a Toasty Torpedo.

Bynum is still coming back from injury, there were matchups that precluded him from playing more. Obviously Yao will do great against Bynum, he has more years/games of experience. You can’t say Yao doesn’t have any playoff experience. His time with the Chinese National team counts quite a bit. Andrew Bynum is young, but he is not dumb, he is very articulate and his selection of words were not inciting, he spoke with respect for Yao ….you guys are throwing the gas that should go in your Ford pickups onto the fire….It’s a shame that they don’t sell Valium over the counter because there are many people out there who are chomping at the bit to “woof! woof!”….and yes they are spilling their beer (made in America)…..

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

I agree that too many people are making a big deal out of this. Bynum is paying his respects, just saying he wants to play the best to be the best (Sorry Dwight, you’re much better on defense and have worlds more potential than Yao, but until you can consistently score like young Shaq or step outside of five feet, you’re not the best). But you have to be crazy to think Jax is going to let Bynum play Yao straight up. Expect lots of help D from Gasol, if Gasol isn’t guarding Yao solo. Maybe one year when you don’t miss 40 games for a gimpy knee, kid. Although by then, maybe by some miracle, we’ll finally see the Healthy Bynum vs. Healthy Oden match-up we’ve all anticipated.
