Bynum Wants Yao in Round 2

Typically, NBA players refuse to tell reporters which opponent they’d like to go up against in the postseason. To which the Lakers’ Andrew Bynum says, to hell with all that!

Bynum, currently enjoying a few days off with his teammates prior to the start of Round Two, has a rooting interest in the Rockets/Blazers series. He wants Houston to win, so that he can go mano-e-mano with Yao Ming.

The Press-Enterprise jotted down Bynum’s wishes for the next round:

Andrew Bynum had just mentioned for the third time how excited he is to face Houston’s Yao Ming in the second round when someone pointed out the Rockets still must win one more game to ensure that clash.

“Yes, but that’s who I’m thinking we’re going to play,” Bynum said, matter-of-factly. “They have two games to win one.”

“It makes me very hungry,” Bynum said. “I can’t wait to go out there against a challenging player like Yao Ming. I know I’m going to play better just because it’s a big guy I’m going to go up against.”

You know, that’s a lot of confidence for a dude who averaged a measly five points and three boards in the previous series (in which, by the way, he didn’t face anyone even remotely as imposing or good as Yao, and could barely get off the bench some games.)

Be careful what you wish for, Andrew, you might just get it.

    it doesnt matter what Bynum wants, Yao will pwn him and end up with Gasol guarding him

    Bynum is sounding more and more like Eric Dampier, who used to boast that he is the best center in the West. So, Yao and Shaq (who was with Maimi) schooled him game after game. Yao is a sportsman. But, Shaq would eventually belittle Dampier as Erica Dampier.

    Angela Bynum has a nice ring to it.

    front him bynum and yaull will win in 5 adelman is gonna be to braindead to have von wafer finish off games and hes gonna have ron and shane to close out games and the lakers will have the ability to get up into the rockets and turn them over due to the lack of penetration from the perimeter.adelman cant coach.

    Bynum is dumb. The Great Wall will destroy him if Andrew guards Yao 1 on 1. More likely the Lakers will double or triple Yao even when he doesn’t have the ball like the Blazers did in the 1st round.

    Anyone who has watched the rockets regularly this year knows two things:

    1. Yao dominates “big” centers who play him straight up(Bynum, Howard).

    2. Yao has trouble with smaller bigs who can shoot, front, and put the ball on the floor(Gasol, Boozer)

    Phil Jackson knows this too. He also knows that Scola would have trouble gaurding Odom/Ariza on the perimiter. My point here is that for all his talk, Bynum will likely ride the pine for most of this series.

    Also, don’t make Yao angry–Quoth the Vanilla Godzilla, about 2 weeks ago: “I want Yao.” RESULT: 24 points on 9/9 shooting in 26 minutes. Fast forward to today. Quoth Bynum: “I want Yao…and Quiznos…but not necessarily in that order.” RESULT: Most likely a smilar amount of Yao domination (until Jackso yanks him), plus a Toasty Torpedo.

    Bynum is still coming back from injury, there were matchups that precluded him from playing more. Obviously Yao will do great against Bynum, he has more years/games of experience. You can’t say Yao doesn’t have any playoff experience. His time with the Chinese National team counts quite a bit. Andrew Bynum is young, but he is not dumb, he is very articulate and his selection of words were not inciting, he spoke with respect for Yao ….you guys are throwing the gas that should go in your Ford pickups onto the fire….It’s a shame that they don’t sell Valium over the counter because there are many people out there who are chomping at the bit to “woof! woof!”….and yes they are spilling their beer (made in America)…..

    I agree that too many people are making a big deal out of this. Bynum is paying his respects, just saying he wants to play the best to be the best (Sorry Dwight, you’re much better on defense and have worlds more potential than Yao, but until you can consistently score like young Shaq or step outside of five feet, you’re not the best). But you have to be crazy to think Jax is going to let Bynum play Yao straight up. Expect lots of help D from Gasol, if Gasol isn’t guarding Yao solo. Maybe one year when you don’t miss 40 games for a gimpy knee, kid. Although by then, maybe by some miracle, we’ll finally see the Healthy Bynum vs. Healthy Oden match-up we’ve all anticipated.
