Delle Donne’s Suiting Up For Delaware

A little more than  a year after calling basketball quits and leaving Uconn, and a few months after announcing that she’d started playing again, it’s now official: Former high school phenom Elena Delle Donne will be playing for the Delaware Blue Hens this coming season.

As the AP reports:

More than a year ago, the former national high school player of the year abruptly left coach Geno Auriemma and a Connecticut team bound for a perfect season and sixth national championship. Now, after a stint starring in volleyball, she’s set to play basketball again…

“I can’t wait for the season to start, especially games,” Delle Donne said in an interview with The Associated Press. “The last time I was this happy was in high school before the whole recruiting thing started. Basketball just wasn’t basketball anymore.”

Her return has already created a buzz for the Blue Hens — season ticket sales have more than tripled…

Her 2,818 career points at Ursuline were the most in Delaware high school basketball history. She set the national high school record hitting 80 straight free throws as a sophomore and had 50 points in the state title game that season on the Blue Hens’ court.

Welcome back, Elena.

Shia, have you seen her play? I used to live in Delaware and got to see a few of her games in high school and one of her AAU games. She can be one of the best female players ever if she doesn’t lose the love of the game, which it appeared she was doing just last year.

I’m glad to hear that now another school will rise because of her. I hope she don’t make everybody else look like jv players

I haven’t been to a Blue Hens game since I was an undergrad. Looks like that’s about to change.

Great news. I’ve seen some of the youtube mixes of her, and she can flat out play + she’s quite attractive for a tall female basketball player. That’ll help media/popularity wise.

I live right down the street a couple miles from U of D. I’ve never seen her play in-person but hopefully I can get some tickets and see her play this year.

Haven’t figured out what to expect from her. Welcome back to hoops, Elena. Should be fun.

  • Jim

She’s going to own the CAA.

  • luv2ball

She should average 25 and 15 in the league she is playing in. If I am not mistaken Deleware plays in the CAA? She should murder the competition in that league.

Unfortunately, Hursty is right. Females still have to have the looks to get endorsements, not only the game. Leslie, Parker, Delle Donne eventually. Sharapova and Kournikova in tennis… nobody was trying to pay Davenport for TV ads when she was smashing everything.

  • Ricky Ross

thats good to hear, seeing as my whole family went there. Shes pretty hot too…if only i was a little taller lol

  • Yassi

Lets discuss how hot Lebron is *rolleyes*
who the f*** cares? and who should? Jesus…..

  • Yassi

    welcome back, Elena.
    have fun!

  • jdote

she’s crazy.. 6’5… which is like an inch taller than candace parker.. but she shoots lights out from the perimeter.. will switch to be the three and four this season.. i kno slam compared her to lebron..i think she’s gonna be like the female dirk and im happy she’s back ballin.

  • Kgomotso Nkhumise

Even South African cats know about EDD. The next Lebron, we’ll see about that. But from the articles I’ve read about her she sure can ball.

  • Hussman25

I have been waiting for this for a year now… Now Slam should do a full-on Piece on this w/ her… Great read it would be for young athletes who go thru the same mental torment she went thru with her decision… She may never want to play professionally, but who can put a price on happiness… Welcome back Elana!

  • BostonBaller

I’m glad she wants to play ball again, now we can all see what SLAM was shouting about. Did she really want to play volleyball and not basketball at all or did she just LOL. I wish her well.

She’s going to be better than a ‘female Dirk’ because her inside game is so freaking amazing. I was complaining about some of the horrible footwork and shooting mechanics that most female ballers have, but this girl moves so slick and her postwork is phenomenal. She has awesome Nash-like scoop shots and Ray Allen-esque range.
And I’m glad she’s back playing basketball.

After D. West in the playoffs I thought Dirk was the female Dirk! Ha ha. Good luck EDD

Somewhat related, as I hope the WNBA is around to show her off…a good column about the state of the W in the wake of the Shocks’s likely move to Tulsa: http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id=4579105
