Win Kobe’s Jersey!

Snatch KB24′s uni right off his back!

by Tzvi Twersky

With the ’08-2009 NBA year winding down, and with the Lakers in the Finals, we couldn’t think of a better time to unveil another new contest. The jersey set (we’re giving away the full uniform, shorts and jersey) up for grabs is not just any ol’ Kobe jersey; this  set was purchased strictly for issue 126′s cover shoot. Aside from telling you that this is an authentic Lakers home model and has a retail value estimated at over $300, I want you to go look at Ish 126 again. You see the Kobe in purple and gold playing offense on the left? Yeah, well if you win this jersey you’ll be a part owner of that dope cover. So whether you root for or against the Lakers, whether you like or dislike Kobe, as long as your a fan of SLAM, the prize is well-worth trying to cop.

The contest itself is pretty simple: Below is a list of every cover of SLAM that Kobe has ever been on. In 100 words (entries that are longer than this won’t be taken into consideration), tell us which is your favorite Kobe cover and why. You can talk about the image, the cover line, the cover story or you can talk about something related. You don’t even have to love Kobe to win; the only requirements are passion and brevity. The contest will be closing next Monday; so get your answers up here pronto. Winners will be contacted via email (that’s why you should be sure to enter a valid email address with you comment!). The winner will be announced, if y’all put your email addresses,  by the end of next week.

You have the chance to win a slice, 1/130th of a chance to put a number on it, of SLAM history! Be a go-getter!

*To help you out on your quest for gold (purple and gold), here is the complete list of SLAM issues  that Kobe’s been on the cover of.

SLAM #15 alongside a few others from the 1996 rookie class.

SLAM #24 Kobe’s first solo cover.

SLAM #39 Scoop discussed a young Kobe’s aspirations.

SLAM #43 A Kobe/Shaq joint cover.

SLAM #66 Kobe and Ryan Jones jammed about what motivates Kobe.

SLAM #74 His first cover post-Colorado.

SLAM #97 Russ broke down Mamba’s game.

SLAM #114 Lang wrote a screenplay featuring Kobe.

SLAM #123 In this, the season preview issue, we picked L.A to win it all this year.

SLAM #126 Well….could he?

SLAM #129 The debate between KB24 and he who will remain nameless.

slam cover 124 was the best. with all this LeBron or Kobe being better than one another it didnt take much to see the difference between them in the cover. You guys captured Kobe’s attitude in that cover…Look at LeBron and Kobe eyes, face carefully and you can see that what separates them is Kobe’s determined, intense face to win ring number 4.LeBron sill looks “innocent” while Kobe has his eyes set on a Trophy.

  • Daniel Dragicevich

I’ve gotta go with number 129 on this one. Seriously, I’m not much of a kobe fan, he’s a good player and all but i dunno, there’s something stopping me from liking him. When I first saw this cover it made me stop and think, can kobe stop kobe? Can anyone stop kobe! I reckon he’s at the peak of his career right now, over the next few seasons he’ll probably fade away a bit and then retire as a legend. It’s a good ish to look back on in 15 years and say, “Dam, he really was that good”.

Get your kicks for Slam #66.

The rarely-displayed black throwback perfectly contrasted over a golden backdrop. The gleaming trio of trophies, a mere glimpse of Kobe’s full potential. The tenacity and hunger, already visible in the young competitor’s eyes. An iconic shot for a true icon of the game. Me against the world and all eyes on me.

SLAM 66. I could just recite to you lil wayne’s dope lyrics, but i’ll try and keep it real. That cover signifies kobe’s place in the history of the game. One of the best players to ever live. SLAM 66 is a tribute to one of the greats. I just can’t WAIT for his next cover, which whatever it will be, will definitely be my favourite. Icing on the cake. One.

  • http://AAAYYYEEE.blogspot.com IGOR MELLO

It’s not even close. Issue 126 is the best Kobe cover. The concept is genius! The story is based on something that we will never know, it makes the readers sit there and imagine how would Kobe guard him self. And if Kobe can’t guard himself, couldn’t that be the true meaning of being “unstoppable”? Not to mention the front cover of the issue is the dopest. You guys have him playing against himself! I never seen that before on a magazine. Not to mention having those two collorways of his new sneaker, and I’m not even a huge KB24 fan. Big ups!

  • james

    gotta be SLAM #126
loving the cover and the article on him was great too. just went looking in my wardrobe to find it but someone moved it but its always stuck out as one of the best ish’s ive ever read, and the question seems even more appropriate now! michael pietrus/courtney lee definitely couldnt stop him!
congrats to the lakers + kobe for yesterday it was long overdue.
    pick meee!

  • Jeremy

Issue #126 has come to define Kobe Bryant. His growth as a player is evident by the cover photo. We all watched as Kobe grew from a single-minded offensive force that was routinely making the exciting seem mundane to a player that dominates on both ends of the floor. All the great ones challenge themselves to become better at all aspects and the cover signifies that Kobe Bryant has indeed done that. His desire and willingness to do whatever it takes to win has become the essence of Kobe. The issue #126 cover captures this in one fell swoop.

  • http://N/A Bryan

My favorite Kobe cover would be SLAM #15. This is my favorite because it was before anyone even thought he would be one of the best players ever. Before the 4 rings, before the MVP, and before the 81 points he was just another NBA rookie. No one knew then that he would be able to rise above all and become one of the greatest players the game of basketball has ever seen.

    #66
kobe in a retro jersey. kobe in front of three tropheys. kobe making me buy slam for the first time ever. kobe making me a slam fan for life.

  • b00gaz

In my opinion it has to be issue #126…the cover speaks for itself. The debate can go on and on, who’s can STOP the mamba? The KING? His AIRNESS? The only person that could stop KOBE is KOBE! That is one creative cover and being a basketball fan it’s a cover that is much appreciated, Thanks SLAM!

  • k.o.

It’s as easy as ish 1-2-3. Kobe vectorized. Lakers unmistakable purple and gold. Kobe focused off-page, no doubt concentrating on the rim and the bucket he’s about to swish. The only cover of 5 that month which made a statement, “SHOWTIME!,” before it asked a rhetorical question, “can anyone beat LA?” The answer: not A.I., but a resounding, dominant and cut-throat N-O. Give this man and the Lake Show what he and they deserve: the O’Brien trophy, the playoff mvp and the rings…and give me his gear while ur at it.

Okay, everybody! The contest is now closing. We’ll post the winner here by week’s end (assuming email ads are real). Good Luck!!

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

And our winner is…Karma Posted: Jun.11 at 6:14 pm
Congrats, Karma, and thanks everyone for playing. If you know us, you know there will be lots more contests coming up. Keep it locked.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Big ups to Karma. Great merchandise there, congrats man.

  • jumpman3224

Congrats to Karma, enjoy that sweet prize…but wasn’t that entry like 40 words over the limit of 100. Just saying

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

    congrats karma, nice!

  • http://mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Karma cheated! He probably helped an old lady cross the street that day, and knowing the rules of Karma, he knew something good was about to come his way.

  • KuntaKente

Yo. Karma’s entry was longer than 100 words, its over 140+ words. I thought all entries over 100 words wouldn’t be counted “In 100 words (entries that are longer than this won’t be taken into consideration)” What happened to that???? Well written by Karma but what about the rules!?!?

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

We definitely screwed up with the word count. Very few people followed the guidelines and we just went with what we liked best without remembering our initial rules. Maybe one day we’ll have an actual staff to handle prize fulfillment but now many of these things are sort of winged. We’ll try and be more on point next time. For what it’s worth, other entries that came in over 100 words were certainly considered. Karma’s prize is already in the mail so we’re not gonna take it back. Next week Tzvi will go through all the entries and send a consolation prize to the top-5 winners who followed the original rules.

  • jumpman3224

Thanks for the quick answer Ben! Karma’s was def. a great essay – Congrats again!

  • Jackie Moon

Seriously, I counted my words and cut it down because of the 100 word count. Otherwise, I totally would have won. Smiley face. But really, I did cut it down.

  • Karma

    Hey guys,

First, a big THANK YOU to the SLAM staff, I was totally not expecting to win, I literally wrote that up in like 2 minutes; it feels good.

Also, I didn’t even realize there was a word count!? Guess I got lucky there.

Thanks again to everyone at SLAM, this is beyond awesome.

  • Pardeep

A lot of people got screwed over here.

  • Pardeep

    Its okay everyone makes mistakes.

  • nathan

i reckon number one hundred and twenty six was the best cover( with kobe on it). at that time kobe was on fire and if kobe lets say from this time last year versed him i reckon that the first kobe that i talked about would win. now to talk about the picture his new shoes the kobe zoom IV are good especialy the ones on the right.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James Wrethman

    Easily issue 123,
Probobly because of the fantastic art used for the front cover.
I was never really a kobe fan for no reason at all. Probobly because they owned Boston heaps but there was something bout this cover that made me like him. LOL
And the Hype part of the issue with Paul Pierce was inspiring because SLAM admitted that Kevin Garnett was the team but it was about time that someone took Pierce out of the shaddows.
Easily the Best issue of the season.
And nice guessing bout Lakers winning the finals. Even though everyone knew.

  • Daniel Dragicevich

yeah we all got screwed real bad, it says in the rules its gotta be 100, then some dude does 140 and wins? yeah ok

  • http://www.jameyburke.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

    Congrats Karma

  • Taranvir

lol the name explains it. What a name. Charma-Karma.

  • adbphilly

Hey, y’all gotta admit, Karma was pretty deep with his entry. He deserved it. Half the people who entered for this contest didnt follow the guidelines. Ben said the Tzvi was going to pick 5 people who did follow the guidelines next week, so dont worry. Anyway congrats and much love to Karma.

  • Iman Elbanna

When will the consolation prize winners be announced?

  • Pardeep

    What are the consolation prizes?

  • ROBBED

“AT Posted: Jun.11 at 11:48 am
Slam 74. Not only the best Kobe cover but your best issue ever. It was the only season preview that year of any magazine that had the balls to put Kobe on the cover. And it was perfect. From the somber-looking Kobe and black background, to the brilliant piece that perfectly intertwined his game and what he was going through at a time where he was coming off his best season ever and entering a life changing/shaping/shattering year. To this day I’ll dig out that issue whenever I’m facing adversity or going through hard times. Perfect. ”

This guy was the real winner. He said everything “Karma” said but actually followed the rules. ROBBED! Whatever it’s all good keep making a great magazine and you’re forgiven.

  • the bomb

  • Taranvir

when choosing the consolation prizes, choose different issues, don’t only select one issue.

  • Jackie Moon
