On Monday, December 17, 2012, Detroit Pistons player, Will Bynum donated $2,500 worth of toys to help more than 400 homeless children in the Detroit community. Bynum partnered with the Cass Christmas Store, CCSS, run by Cass Community Social Services for the effort. Homeless parents were able to shop a Detroit warehouse, located at 3745 Cass, Ave., which was transformed into a store, pick out toys and essentials for their families and then pick out giftwrap to personally wrap the chosen presents. The event allowed a new homeless family to pick out a gift for their child every five minutes–from 10am-7pm.

“For me, the real gift of this season is being able to give back to others. I want to share my blessings and help as many people as I can not only with gifts, but with knowledge, inspiration and hope to the communities that aren’t as fortunate,” Bynum said.

With the help of Bynum and his generous donation, CCSS, was able to provide gifts for children from age’s newborn-18. Of the five years the center has been doing this event, this year was the most successful and helped the most people. “We truly appreciate what Will has done for us and his generous donation. Our kids wouldn’t have had a Christmas without these gifts,” said one parent shopping the store yesterday.

“Before Will’s donation, we were very scarce on toys. His generosity truly made a difference for a lot of children” said Reverend Faith Fowler, Executive Director of the Cass Community Social Services. “After the recent incidents in Connecticut that have happened, it’s great to have someone do so much for children. Will has taken the time to help out vulnerable children to ensure that they have a special holiday,” Fowler went on to say. According to reports, Detroit has half the median income, three times the poverty rate of the nation.

Bynum’s generosity continues this Saturday, December 22, 2012 in his home city of Chicago. Bynum is donating 175 toys to the Local Advisory Council of Chicago Housing Advisory. The organization will be hosting a Breakfast with Santa and providing gifts, given by Bynum, to the children of West Haven Homes.
