Georgetown Dismisses Forward Greg Whittington

Shortly before Georgetown went out and obliterated Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon, Hoya coach John Thompson III announced that junior forward Greg Whittington was dismissed from the team.

Whittington averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in 13 games last year as he shared the Hoya frontcourt with Big East Player of the Year Otto Porter. He was unable to play in any of the team’s games this season due to an offseason knee injury.

From The Washington Post:

The 6-foot-8 Whittington hadn’t played for the Hoyas since Jan. 8, forced to sit out the remainder of last season for academic reasons. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament over the summer and, after undergoing knee surgery, wasn’t necessarily projected to return to the lineup this season, either.

Thompson declined in his postgame news conference to explain why Whittington was dismissed or comment on how his departure might affect the team in the future.

There is no word on whether or not this is the end of Whittington’s basketball career or if he will attempt to transfer and play somewhere else.
