Video: What to Do About Trevor Ariza (and Lamar Odom)?

by Marcel Mutoni

With the Blazers administering a serious beatdown of the Lakers last night — handing L.A. its worst loss of the season — Trevor Ariza saw an opportunity to send a message.

Ariza, in attempt to stop a Blazer fastbreak, sent Rudy Fernandez crashing to the floor with a hard foul. Fernandez left the court on a stretcher. Here’s video of the play:

Due to the nastiness of the spill, a suspension is probably on the way for Ariza, and as you can clearly see in the clip, Lamar Odom left the bench area and could face a suspension as well. Which, considering the way he’s been playing of late, might not be the worst thing in the world.

X-rays and a CT scan performed on Fernandez were negative.

    Rudy is sensitive.

Another reason to dislike this squad…..good times. Glad Rudy’s alright. And Brandon looked like he would have given Trevor the biz-iz-nezz.

  • Diogo

It was a normal foul. A hard one, but not intentional. Also, first.

  • Diogo

No first. But did anyone see what Ariza told Phil Jackson? On the extended clip, you see him go by Jackson after getting ejected. I think he said something like “I went for the ball” and Phil said “I know that”.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQEmmgDl9I Boing Dynasty

Eboy, Roy might have changed his mind when he found out that Trevor could fight him at half court, while sitting in the locker room.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Man, that was rough looking. I really don’t think Ariza had any ill intent going for that ball, but it still didn’t look good.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I don’t know if BRoy could take Ariza (he never seemed like the fighting type to me, too nice) But it was good to see him show some passion in sticking up for his teammate. I think Ariza meant it to be a hard foul around the arms but ended up clipping Rudy across the top of his head. Not sure if Ariza should be suspended but if he is, it should only be one game, LO will definitely get suspended for leaving the bench though.

  • neaorin

The Zen Master needs to explain the nuances between “playing hard” and “playing recklessly” to his underlings.

  • Tom

I agree with Tad, Rudy just landed really bad, I’m not so sure it was because of Ariza getting him on the head though. Ariza should get a game anyways. If it were playoffs I’d be more worried. As for Odom, he did leave the bench, but he didn’t step on the court. If i’m not mistaken when a player leaves the bench and steps on the court is when its and automatic suspension.

  • Jack

not a fan of Rudy Fernandez. It was nice to see him get his shot blocked right back at his face the other night.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I thought LO did go on the court? If he didn’t it definitel’y SHOULDN’T be a suspension. Just standing up when something like that happens is pretty much an involuntary reaction… no reason to ssupend a guy unless he goes from the bench over to where the conflict is on the court.

  • Harlem_World

Man, the best bit on the clip is one of the lakers assistants choking the sh*t out of the blazers ball boy when he yanks him out the way “Get outta here kid…beat it”. Cold. Now if that ball boy was one of the players kids? It would have REALLY been on.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Rudy should try that in the Dunk Contest.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Tasteless jokes aside, you hit a dude in the head, from behind, when he’s in a full sprint toward the hoop, you need to sit for a game or three.

  • Prison Mike

Maybe Ariza should have gave that all out effort before they got down by 25. I hate any foul or time out in the fourth quarter during a 20 point blow out. Just end the game already.

  • riggs

co-sign prison mike, youre losing by that much if you know u have no chance at the ball then pull back, also check on the player after you do some dumb sh*t like that, dont be like lamar odom and walk off cursing everybody like the D*ck that he is.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

That foul was really not that bad. When Al Horford nailed TJ Ford in the head last year that was a real flagrant. Ariza’s hand didn’t even get all that much of Rudy’s head and it definitely didn’t look like he was trying to hurt him. Rudy had feeling in his extremities when he left the court. I wonder if this was just an elaborate flop.

  • http://ungoinkillmepannuh.blogspot.com Esco

Remember Boris Diaw left the bench also during the playoffs against the Spurs, he was at the scorer’s table. And he got suspended. He didn’t step on the court. Amare did, but Boris did not. LO should be suspended. He left the bench and went at Roy.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I don’t think that there was anything intentional there but I wouldn’t be mad at a couple game suspension since he did bring him down dangerously awkward.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

  • dj

    that was not a flagrant!

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Rough foul, yeah. But at least he went after Rudy’s hands. He didn’t fling him full-strength face first into the floor with both arms.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

He didn’t even hit him that hard. Plust he got some ball. Dude just didn’t have proper body control in the air.

  • kev

that foul was very flagrant, if you play ball you know you have to be careful with how you hit someone in the air. He had no chance of blocking that shot. He hit his head and then pulled him by the arm which is why he flew sideways like that. Do you think he was acting? I don’t think you would want to hit the floor like that on purpose. Also everyone

  • bogmog

rudy is acting like a soccer player. being carried out on a strectcher…prag.

The hit on the head didn’t look to me like the issue. Looked like Ariza pulled Rudy down and to the side by his arm after the “block”. Good on Farmar being the first player to Rudy’s side checking on him.

  • http://google canadian

It’s tough to see in this clip but if you check a slow mo from under the basket looks like Ariza tried to pull Rudy down after he already knocked the ball away.

  • adrian

it was a play at the ball rudy just landed akward if u look close is foot just missed the court. i hope TA or LO dont miss any games

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Word to Farmar for checking on Rudy immedietely

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

I don’t think Ariza is trying to take down Rudy but anyway, Ariza and LO deserved the suspension.
Now, let’s see some action for Shannon Brown

  • Randy Brown

This is the first site I’ve been on that’s not treating this as unquestionably a flagrant foul. It looked awful, particularly to the trailing Blazers, but it’s a genuine attempt on the ball. Reckless, yes, but dirty, no.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I think the end result was unfortunate, but I’m not even convinced he should have been tossed for that. These flagrant two rules are increasingly becoming about the fouled player’s response. That being said, I heart Rudy and I hope he’s okay by Sunday when they come to Atlanta.

  • Myung

Similar to when Josh Smith fouled Harpring 2 weeks ago… I don’t think it was a flagrant. Like many of you have already written, I think he just fell hard.

  • Joe A

It wasn’t a dirty play, but it was definitely stupid. And I was happy to see the Blazers stand up for their boy, especially B-Roy.

  • Sarah

I the suggestion that this was perhaps an “elaborate flop” was a joke. When a guy gets taken out of the air like that it’s hard to control how he lands; we’ve seen it plenty of times. I think Ariza was trying to get ball, but he certainly got nothing but head. As for Odom, he should probably get one game. The technicality of him not being on the actual court is irrelevant. He crossed into the baseline, where the scuffle was, in attempt to escalate it. Doesn’t matter anyway, he’s about worthless to that team most of the time. I always said he was over-hyped.

  • Sarah

    *hope the suggestion

  • Static

one game suspensions mainly cuz of the way Ariza reacted like it wasnt his fault…maybe not completely but his foul started the chain reaction. He should’ve at least been apologetic then and tried to help. I guess when you getting your @ss handed to you reactions are different. Didnt see it clearly, but wasnt that Ariza on the first highlight almost breaking his face when Rudy drilled the 3?

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Well, I’m not neccessarily speaking to Rudy with Flop+Flop=Flagrant; but I am speaking to a growing trend of players anticipating being fouled, flailing around like fish out of water, and once they do get hit, landing crazy awkwardly.

  • Cizzo

The Lakers can’t do any wrong in my eye’s anddidn’t do anything wrong, the NBA is killing the League with all these baby ass calls. When supposedly the best player in the L[JBJ] is the biggest cry baby the game lacks alot of integrity. FYI Kobe is the best baller in the L hands down!!!!! Booches!

  • Scoop

man he didn’t even hit him that hard. homeboy just has bad balance and fell hard. but then again i played football….

  • riggs

    “The Lakers can’t do any wrong in my eye’s anddidn’t do anything wrong”;

    you’re an idiot.

  • BostonBaller

Ariza did NOT get suspended. In a dumb attempt at a block (down 20 something?) he went for the ball but if you see it from another angle you do see a bit of a arm tug as slight as it was. I’m sure Ariza was a bit pissed about being out there in the blowout and emotions get carried away. I’m sure he didn’t mean to hurt him but I’m sure he put a little more umph into it after the contact. As far as him mouthing I went for the ball I’m sure he did say that but it doesn’t mean the extra arm swing didn’t happen. That is what caused it along with the head shot. Go to youtube and look at it from various angles.

  • BostonBaller

As far as Odom goes, he is quickly getting a rep for dirty or questionable plays. If you really watch the games you will see him taking cheap shots on the sly. He should get a suspension b/c he left the bench and got in a players face. The Lakers as a whole seem not to like The Blazers much like Detroit disliked Chicago. So much so that they do stupid things and give a few extra licks. I like watching the Lakers and especially Kobe (yes I’m a True Celtics fan) but the do seem to get pissed at the young Blazers. lol

  • BostonBaller

As a football player you know you’re going to get hit. As a football player you also should know that it’s not always how hard you hit someone it’s how/where you hit someone. A runner spins like a top when he is tapped in the air when diving over the pile into the endzone. Different game different rules.

  • http://crazedteacups.typepad.com Valarie

I’d like to second overtime – Farmar was a class act to show his concern right away.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

suspend them both for the first round of the playoffs!!

  • bulldog

Take a beating- Give a beating. That’s natural balance – Lakers Style! Seriously, that was an unusual and awkward play. Obviously Ariza and the Lakers were pissed off but then again the Blazers were trying too hard to embarass them. That, unfortunately bought them an extra highlight clip they didn’t want. Anybody think basketball is not a contact sport? As for the Celtics – you’ve got mail.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

anyone who says thats not a flagrant two is incredibly retarded. rudy was in the air about to make the layup, when ariza hit him in the head, im sure ariza didnt plan on it, but it happened. suspensions for ariza and odom

  • niQ

lost respect for ariza. what a tool.

  • Kozmic

Happy days, the Lakers start droppin to 2nd or 3rd…

  • Jake

In all honesty, that wasn’t even that bad of a fall.I’m sure it hurt but I’ve seen much worse come on.Plus if you watch the video you can tell that Ariza went for the ball.At most he should get a one game suspension, but so should some of the Blazers players for escalating the situation.

  • http://www.liveddb.com DDB

Why guys commit fouls like that they should not eject them. They should wait for the retaliation that should be brutal enough to force their exit from the game.

  • Chris

That was a not a flagrant 2…there was a geniune attempt at the ball. If Ariza get’s more than 1 game I will be upset, although Lamar deserves a couple for getting off the bench.

  • Josh D

Please give them suspension especially Odom the Spurs are playing them on Thursday and i’d od anything for the Spurs to win

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Lakers are bunch of b!tch ass faggots

  • j-smoov 5

    @ Jake:

True. He did go for the ball but he fouled. The Blazers and Lakers do need some players suspended for making the siuation worst.

  • j-smoov 5

  • Pistons_Go

I’m a fan of Rudy F and with that said Ariza should be suspended 1 game and Odom should be suspended 2…A couple Blazers players should be out 1 game aswell…

  • donlaker

  • http://www.blogs.myspace.com/orignadro Witness

wow. i like the blazers tenacity.

blazers vs lakers round 1. i wanna see it.

  • stokesey

typical european exageration… it was a hard foul yes, but if he didnt flail around thinking he was on a soccer(sorry..football) Pitch, he wouldnt have hurt himself so badly, AND gets taken off on a stretcher!!!! What injuries did he get?? soft tissue… I can see Alonzo shaking his head

  • BostonBaller

@donlaker you keep challenging people and someone may just show up and when they do I hope you are ready. lol. I’ve done the V beach thing in the past and it was tight. I’ve been around the circuit and EVERY city I’ve been in has game so don’t make it seem like just b/c the Lakers are in Cali that Cali is tops, you still have the Clips and Kings there. lol.
