Video: Butler-Pitt Battle to Epic Ending

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

This year’s Butler looks like it might be…Butler. The Bulldogs were the first team to knock off a No.1 seed in this year’s tournament when Matt Howard sank a free throw with 0.8 seconds remaining to give his team a 71-70 victory over Pittsburgh.

A frantic and somewhat controversial final seconds provided the tournament with its best finish so far. With Butler trailing by one and close to three seconds remaining, Andrew Smith hit a layup to put the Bulldogs up 70-69.

On the ensuing inbound pass, Shelvin Mack fouled Gilbert Brown near midcourt when he bumped him with his body. After Brown hit the first free throw, he missed the second and as Howard corralled the rebound he was fouled by Nasir Robinson with 0.8 seconds remaining.

Howard hit the first of two free throws to put his team ahead for good and give Butler yet another upset victory in March. For Howard, it was his second-straight game-winning basket. He finished with 16 points, while Mack, who almost became the goat, had 30.

Terrible way to end game, season.

….I don’t care what the rules are, you DONT make that call….PERIOD

Both fouls were remarkably stupid, but, both were correctly called.

  • Josh

The Black Rick Kamla.. that is retarded. You have to make that call. They are clear fouls. What you don’t do, is stick your arm in a guys way with .8 seconds left. But those calls have to be made, otherwise what the hell is the point of having refs? The last few seconds of the game should just go unofficiated?

@The Black Rick Kamla: You’re wrong.

@Josh you just swallow your whistle man….thats just how I feel. Swallow the whistle. Its apparent Robinson was going up to get his hands the ball when it came off the rim, but as soon as Matt got possession he flinged it before he could pull his arm away….its just unfortunate………and nobody wants to watch friggin Butler again…

overall terrible game for Pitt….they’re so much better than that. Hopefully Nasir don’t get too donwn on himself, the whole team dropped the ball there. Gotta give the props to Butler though, Shelvin Mack showed out, and big time clutch by Howard…..I still think Ashton Gibbs has got to start taking more shots man. I feel that lost them the game against UConn, and maybe this one too….just gotta be more demanding on the offensive end. He’s just got a talent for shooting the basketball…up to Jamie Dixon to really get him more involved, but ultimately him to get his shots off

im ok with the first call on the hail mary. but the foul on the rebound im not so sure abot. i mean that is a routine play that never gets called unless someone flops or when it causes the rebounder to lose the ball. i dont mind refs making correct calls but i would have loved to see overtime

    Epic Ending?????
Dumb fouls by young players have nothing to do with an epic ending.
Come on slam, you are better than that.

    Epic fail ending.

  • dako24

Both are definitely fouls. I think you might be a Pitt fan which is okay. I understand your hurt. Kansas lost to Northern Iowa…..

It’s sad for the kids who fouled, they’ll see this footage for the rest of their life (especially the guy from Pittsburg).

    Pitt happens.

  • Shem

Yesterday on the Polladaday 65% of SLAM commentators (including me) said Pitt would be the first #1 seed to be eliminated, some real basketball junkies over here.

  • Josh

@black rick, im just saying man, if you swallow your whistle at that point there is going to be some controversy. Basketball players have to get themselves out of a stupid situation like that, if they don’t, it is the refs job to call it. I just don’t see how you can’t call that, it is obvious.

  • 2KInsider

They play like first graders. “He has the ball! Hit him!”

  • Zarfan

A foul’s a foul. They’ll just have to live with the consequences.

The only question I have is whether either fouls are worse than the Webber Timeout.

The Black Rick Kamla: you dont make that call? it was an obvious foul! you have to make that call it was so stupid for the players to even foul both times but to not make that call wouldve been obsurd! Dude seriously think about what you type. Usually what you say i can agree with but to make the call: is outrageous. clear foul.
