David Lee Re-Ups; Nate Robinson Next

by Marcel Mutoni

The New York Knicks didn’t acquire any new big-time free agents this summer, but it’s not all for naught: They at least kept both of their own top restricted free agents. Nothing has been officially put to paper yet, but according to David Lee’s agent, the deal is as good as done.

Lee’s diminutive buddy on the court, Nate Robinson, is also just about ready to sign his name on the dotted line.

ESPN reports:

“We’re on the verge of getting this done,” agent Mark Bartelstein said. “I believe David will sign the contract tomorrow.” The contract is believed to be worth in the $8 million range for the 2009-10 season.

Fellow restricted free agent Nate Robinson has also reached terms with the Knicks on a one-year deal, according to a source with knowledge of the talks, that will pay him a higher salary than his $2.9 million qualifying offer.

By signing one-year contracts, David and Nate will of course be back at the negotiating table next summer as unrestricted free agents, joining a bunch of players that you’ve never heard of.

Lee’s deal is reportedly for $7 million, with a $1 million bonus if the Knicks make the Playoffs next season.

In other words, David Lee’s deal is worth exactly $7 million.

    Love the last line, Marcel.

Lebron is really gonna want to play with these guys next year…not

This is great for the Knicks. It’ll keep fans in the seats even if they won’t make the playoffs.

  • rog123

What if lee gets the knicks to the finals? Will nyc give him a $1 billion bonus??

  • http://shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

How exciting. The Bobcats better watch out! No one gives a crap about David Lee.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

ShoeNut, 16 and 11 is definitely nothing so sneeze at. He’s one of the best in the league at picking up double-doubles. David Lee is the real deal.

  • http://shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

Nice point Moose. Lee may have some nice games, but is it enough to take them to the playoffs?

  • rog123

Who does David Lee compete with to get those rebounds?

  • andrew

@rog123 Probably the same person Eddy curry competes with to see who can eat the most cheeseburgers

    Last line was gold.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@ ShoeNut: Aw, hell naw. But David Lee is very, very valuable. And the definition of consistent.

  • http://www.in-n-outnba.blogspot.com Lucas

They have a shot. The X-factor is going to have to be Danillo. If Gallinari can step up his game and stay healthy, this team could present some problems for old teams like the Celtics.

  • rog123

I never said anything to the effect of lee competing. That wasn’t me. That was some other dude usin my name.

  • rainman10

David Lee competes with Dwight Howard, Troy Murphy, KG, and every other big man in the league to get rebounds. Man puts in work.

  • rog123

    Troy murphy? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

rog123, were you aware that Murphy averaged 11.8 boards last year??

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Lee is somewhat overrated. The stats don’t match what I see on the floor. He’s not a factor, not even a game changer. Yeah, he gets boards as the lone big man out there… he rebounds the ball well, I’ll give him that. I just don’t think he’s a very good basketball player. low bball iq and poor fundamentals.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Wow z you are so wrong.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Please elaborate, Bryan. I feel very strongly about the last sentence.

“why is nobody buyig my estrada glasss? Hello, Estrada! E-S-T-R-A-D-A.” Same thing from that Burger King commercial (reppin the glenwood ave location til i die!) applies here. Why wasnt anyone payind david lee? Hello, DAVID LEE! D-L-E-E. A walking double double?

  • LeoneL

Agree with Lucas. Gallo and Wilson Chandler should step-up their games this season. Also, Jordan Hill should get decent burn, hopefully he produce. If only Darko can realize his full potential (he can shoot, post up, run the floor, and rip jerseys)then maybe, just maybe, Lee can have that extra million…

No, but as a free agent 9that just got his teams to the finals) the following year he could probably get
a pretty nice contract ANYWHERE ELSE!

  • La Maravilla

They should of give him more then 7 millions men they tripping

Z is 100% right. David Lee is all athletics. He boxes out well, but his moves are very plotted out and random, his mechanics are awful, and his erratic scoring + production are mostly the cause of not being able to plot out what moves work on what defender (ie that spin move is only going to work if the defender is playing close to you).
But David Lee is white, so he can’t possibly be athletic and dumb, he has to be unathletic and very smart.

If Kevin Garnett’s knee is a non-issue, I’m going to enjoy watching all of the doubters eat their words. Remember, these “old” Celtics were on the verge of 70 wins last season before Ticket went down.

  • Mack

David Lee is a hustle player, he could grab 9+ on a playoff team. Saying he’s an average rebounder is ridiculous.

  • Mack

Take this into account: David Lee played center practically the entire year. He’s a power forward. He still averaged over 11 boards. He played against bigger, stronger, sometimes faster players at his position, and his FUNDAMENTALS, which some people think are poor, win out and his hard work shows in his stats. Maybe not enough to get the team some more wins, but he’s a force in the paint.

  • rog123

who is posting comments under my name??????????????? quit that ish man.

  • http://fjdklf.com Jukai

Mack: No, his unreal ATHLETICISM grabbed him those boards. There are a lot of power forwards way bigger than centers in today’s league. I said he boxed out well enough, and he has great hustle and boundless energy (ie stamina ie another athletic talent).
But he is fundamentally AWFUL both offensively and defensively. Flatfooted, plotted offense. Stop talking about his rebounds. He didn’t average 18 rebounds a game.

  • Z

Wow, I can’t believe that cats are praising Lee’s fundamentals. Stop talking about him like he’s some scrawny white kid that got to the NBA because of smarts and hustle. He’s a 6-9, 240 freak athlete with sick hops and a knack for rebounding. That’s why he’s in the league. He’s basketball IQ is very, very low (misses rotations all the time, often in no man’s land) and his fundamentals are very poor (can’t take what the defense gives him, makes up his mind before reading the D). And he doesn’t even hustle like that, very lazy on D. I’m just telling it like it is. He’s a dumb (in a basketball sense) freak athlete à la Sam Dalembert like Juks said.

  • http://www.bluefontmakesmerelevant.com Hisham

Jukai: Stamina isn’t an athletic talent, it’s a skill. something that you work very hard to train and develop.

  • chintao

@ Jukai ==> Can you explain how something can be both
“plotted out” and “random”? For the record, I agree with Z. Not much reason to pay this guy, other than to serve as a token to draw bankers and suburbanites to MSG.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Hisham, what does that even mean? You can’t work very hard to train and develop an athletic talent? Sprinters are just naturally gifted enough to run under 10 secs? Calf raises won’t make you jump higher? Plyometrics won’t improve your fist step?
