Avery Johnson Sees a Bit of Tim Duncan in Derrick Favors

Favors’ new coach has rather high expectations of the kid, to say the least. From FanHouse: “Not that Avery Johnson wants to put any extra pressure on rookie power forward Derrick Favors. Then again, when you make a comparison to Tim Duncan, that’s pretty heady stuff. ‘He reminds me of Duncan in the way he’s coachable,’ the New Jersey coach said. ‘Duncan was that way, very coachable, but also very skilled. Duncan came in with the left and the right hand and came in with the ability to shoot the ball. And this kid didn’t even go through college as long as Duncan. We’re just getting him after his freshman year.’ Johnson knows quite a bit about Duncan, who played four years at Wake Forest before being the top pick in the 1997 draft by San Antonio. Johnson was Duncan’s teammate for the first four of his now 13 seasons with the Spurs, including being on hand when Duncan won the first of his four NBA titles in 1999.”

    Prolly just the same school

  • Clay

He sees Timmy in him, but Favors won’t let him out.

His comment is being taken way out of context. All he said is that Favors is coachable like Duncan. That’s it.

Avery needs to look for all the bright spots he can on that roster who arent named Harris or Lopez. Having a coachable player in Favors benefits the team because Avery loves to coach…everything. They dont call him the general for nothing.

@Enigmatic – Quite often player and coach quotes end up chopped up pretty badly just to make news on a slow news day. Avery says Favors is coachable just like Duncan(which can be paraphrased as “thank god this kid isn’t an a-hole and he’ll listen to me for awhile”). Reporter’s headline becomes something like “Tim Duncan’s former teammate says Derrick Favors is a mortal lock to be at least 3 times as good as Duncan ever was.” ESPN headlines are the worst. They put up teaser headlines as links and then the actual story has little to do with the headline.

@Mikec yeah thats what avery really means.

Why is this so shocking though? People are comparing Derek Favors coming out to Tim Duncan coming out…. Tim Duncan came out after four years of college. Only three of those years were dominant. Duncan’s first year was severely limited.
Let Derrick Favors play, let’s see how he is, maybe the comment was completely valid.

@brotherwithwisdom – I have no idea what Avery really meant. I’m just on here talking crazy noise today. Too sick to go to work, but not too sick to be bored as hell. That’s a recipe for a whole pile of dumb posts from me.

He’s tall and can play basketball, just like Duncan.

We can sit here all day and debate what Avery meant, but it seems he feels the kid’s mental state and willingness to work are comparable to Duncan. As far as style of play Lopez is much, much more similar to Duncan than anyone I’ve ever seen. As far as Favors, if he lives up to his potential, I see him play similar to Amare, with a little Kenyon Martin in him defensively. All I know is, the Nets have some nice pieces, not only in their bigs, but also TWill, Damion James, and Anthony Morrow.

Jukai, you realize that you typed that out of TD’s 4 years of college, that ONLY 3 were dominant right?

  • http://IjustWantMyNameToLookBig.com Chukaz

Johnson also sees some MJ in TWill in the way they are both tall, black, can dunk, n made basketball their profession

I see some jordan in my dad. they are both bald n in their 40s

? Really… Oh yeah I see how they’re similar they’re both tall and black. But that’s it.

  • http://sdfkjlf.com Jukai

Spaceship Jay: Yes… meaning his freshman year was sort of subpar… I mean, do you want me to explain this with hand puppets?

  • jrodmc

yeah, favors has hair and two legs and arms… wears sneakers…eats food…floats in water…

Avery never has been confused with a rocket scientist

  • jrodmc

he’s coachable. meaning he doesn’t leave his headphones on while Avery’s squeaking at him…
