Lakers Want Pau Gasol To Do More

With Kobe Bryant recuperating from off-season surgery, the Lakers will need more from Pau Gasol. They’re asking for more, too, via the L.A. Times: “The bar has been raised for Pau Gasol — by Lakers Coach Phil Jackson and assistant Brian Shaw. They want him to be more of a force for the Lakers when the regular season starts Tuesday night at Staples Center against the Houston Rockets. Jackson and Shaw maintained that Gasol has to be The Man for perhaps the first month of the season because, as Shaw said, ‘We’re kind of limping going into the season.’ … ‘They [Jackson and Shaw] are ambitious,’ Gasol said. ‘I’ve responded pretty well to different challenges in my career. But again, whatever is needed, whatever is asked of me, I’ll try to step up and deliver.” … Gasol quickly pointed out that it wasn’t as if his play during the exhibition season was shabby. ‘I’m sure it needs some tuneup and sharpening,’ he said. ‘But I’m not discontent with where I’m at right now. Like I said, I look forward to the start-up Tuesday and to be really aggressive on both ends and step up the intensity level. That’s going to be the key for us to get going that way to be intense on both ends of the court. And it starts with me too.’”

Kobe’s clock is ticking THIS season.

I tell people all the time, this is not the Paul Gasol that with Memphis was more of a beast overall. Pau has two offensive moves and a jumpshot, plays alright defense, but the Lakers pressuring Gasol to step up is a way to build up his motivation to be better. Phil is using his Zen ability mind set to help Gasol get a mean streak, but hopefully Pau can step up. BOOK IT!!

Kobe’s clock isn’t ticking for another 4 years.

the kobe clock ticking stories and comments should be fun when hes got 6 rings after this year.. ppl either hate or just lack knowledge

  • Jose

i hear no ticking on Kobe clock at all. He’ll be fine. but it will be interesting seeing how Pau responds to this

Pau could probably put up about 22-12 on a different team. That said, I don’t think he has the arsenal to be the number one option for the Lakers.

He’s been resting all summer for this.

Gasol is going to be there #1 option in the begining of the season and he has no problem with that cuz he was the main guy in memphis for years and he is one of the top big men in the game.

Bla bla you guys are just plain silly….Phil is just pulling his same old tricks again….back in the early 90s when he was teasing scottie pippen to do the same and in the 00′s with young kobe….pau and the lakers will be alright regardless of Jackson’s pseudo motivational stunts…if you are a 2-time nba champion you don;t need motivation

Imagine if Lakers score Melo out of all this trade talk drama. Wouldn’t be a bad fit if he helps Kobe on offense. I can only dream though.

seed, “zen ability mind set”? damn, youre stupid.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Lakers need to use the early part of the season to get Pau Gasol comfortable with closing close games out late in the 4th quarter.

So with Kobe out does Pau become the ‘Bearded Mamba’? This first month is going to look ALOT like the days when Gasol was in Memphis; the main guy on both ends of the floor and a lot of action going through the post up offense.

Re: Pau being #1 for the begining of the season its an awsome mind games of Phil i love it as it is Pau is getting better and better ever since first time around with the Celtics and as Kobe does begin to get olders in year 2015 and on Pau will be the face of the Lakers by then as he will still have some legs under him unless we get Carmelo or Blake Griffin wich seems like a Lebron prototype but would have been better if he wouldnt have hurted his knee he should be comming to the Real L.A. Young Blake Griffin

hahaha, “bearded mamba”, that’s a good one

This is good for Pau. I hope Kobe can still stay healthy and be 100% after the half of the season.

Pau should have no issues stepping up. He’s a go-to option when he plays for Spain.

If he plays well, it’ll fire up Kobe to be better.

    All good for the Lakers.
