Is Dwyane Wade Unhappy With Crunch-Time Role?

Having watched his new, high-profile teammates falter in late-game situations over and over again this season (leading to tears in the Heat locker room), the frustration for DWade seemed to bubble over to the surface yesterday. From the Miami Herald: “Among the post-game comments that drew concern is this one from Wade: ‘I’m used to, of course, coming down in the fourth quarter, having the ball, making mistakes, getting a chance to make up for them,’ Wade said. ‘So you’re just trying to get comfortable with whatever role you have to play at the moment, and you try to do your best at it. That’s all you can do. What is pouting going to do? What is not doing it going to do? That was one of the things that we knew we had to do when we all decided to come together. Sacrifices had to be made.’ He basically said he’s still having issues adjusting to playing with LeBron James, who handles a lot of the late-game duties. In all the most recent late-game failures, Wade hasn’t really been involved – only getting that last shot Sunday because of an offensive rebound. It’s almost as if their success playing together earlier this season was essentially while the team was blowing teams out. Once things get tight, then their comfort level together is still an issue. And in late-game situations, one guy’s not passing to the other. It’s pretty much all LeBron or a kick to a shooter who’s not named Dwyane. Kind of defeats the purpose of playing together.”

I don’t know but he should be.

Mario Chalmers was the clutch guy in this game! Leball hog needs to admit he’s not clutch and give up the rock. Bosh was having a monster game and never took a shot in like the last 9 minutes of the game.

  • Ali

BLUF. The problem ain’t Wade or Lebron, or even Bosh. It’s Dampier, Miller, Bibby, House, Ilgalskas, Howard, Jones, Chalmers, and the head coach. These guys aren’t going to EVER! do anything to help your team win a championship.

  • http://bugmarley.com Leonel

Sign guys from the D-League. They might show more heart than this Heat bench.

  • T-Money

8-19 fg, 20 pts, 7 TO’s… shouldn’t he be concerned with playing well in a big game first? I’m just saying, it’s too easy to only dissect the last 30 seconds of a game. Yesterday’s game, like the Orlando game, was lost in the 3rd quarter when Miami wasn’t able to protect the lead.

  • JTaylor21

The same guy that’s an average ft shooter and commits turnovers by the handful is crying about his crunch time role. Sounds like pouting to me.

  • http://slamonline.com JAY

with lebron shooting in the clutch lets every one know this is no longer wade’s team. also lebron is featured on all commercials and advertisements.

  • Ali

My co-worker (a Heat Fan) brought these stats to me, 6 Pts, 26 Pts, and 11 Pts…Those are the point totals from the MIA bench, starting PG, and starting Center in their last three games. Tell me what team in the NBA will win with those numbers? NOT ONE, that’s how many!
The big there could put up 25pts each every night, but if these other guys they brought in to help don’t produce it’s a wrap!

  • dsleepy

dwade should be the closer. i think most ppl know this except lebron and spoelstra

  • Dagger

Lebron is taking a lot of criticism right now, and deservedly so, but Wade missed a clutch shot yesterday and has consistently faltered in big games this year.

  • dsleepy

and did you see that last layup attempt by lebron? they highlighted mike miller, who ran off the open 3-point shot to jump into the paint; blaming miller for “not being open.” i can tell you from experience, when you’re open for the J but you decide to jump into the paint for a rebound-attempt, it’s because you know the ball is not going to come to you. he knew lebron wasn’t going to look for him. lebron needs to let his ego go and admit wade is the clutch closer on this team. otherwise, heat will go nowhere. the bench isn’t great, but when you consitently can’t win the close ones with a supposed “closer” who keep trying to go 1on5, the problem is not the bench. sorry for the essay

  • http://Gmail Dirty Frank

Two words for Wade &’Bron. PICK & ROLL. Does anybody have an explanation for why they don’t use this?

  • http://Gmail Dirty Frank

Ok. They ran a pick & roll but maybe should work a little more on it so they get something a little better

  • Jose

Wade has more of the ‘Closer’ mentality than LBJ and Bosh Combined. . . but i think you gotta give the ball to the guy with the hot hand.

  • rubs93

you can’t win in apr/may/jun w/o have some true offensive sets the heat play too much one on one and it makes it easy for the good teams to stop them lebron needs to make up his mind either give up the pg role and go be a scorer and let the pg set up the big three or be the pg and set up bosh and wade and run the offense until they decide they always coming up short let the coach do the coaching and just play

  • http://nba.com EJ

DWade should be taking the game winner. Lebron can’t do it.

  • Brian

I don’t think having someone else take the last shot will help the Heat at the end of games. What Wade is saying is that he can’t be effective at the end of games if he is just given the ball with 10 seconds left. He needs to have it in his hands for the entire 4th Q to succeed. We are seeing the same thing with LeBron.
Great stats do not a great player make.

  • Wall Ball

LeBum is an overrated, prima donna new school all fluff and no substance. Can we say OVERRATED…again…Don’t get me wrong, Lebron is talented but he doesn’t have the heart of a champion like D-Wade does…If he were a great player, he would play great against great teams…meaning win…Give the ball to the 2nd best Chicago area product in history when the game is on the line joe…Lebum needs to play the facilitator role this isn’t Cleveland. D-Wade has been there.Recgonize that fam

BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on playoffs……. Which teams is begging to play Miami in the First round? Answers anyone?

  • knicksvet82

Maybe teams should start rethinking this whole star stacking concept and do it like the 80′s. Well, Aside from NY.. (smirk)

  • Drew

LeBron can be the main guy for 47 minutes a game, but there’s no question that when it comes to closing out the game it should be all D.Wade.

  • Red Star

Maybe someone should remind LeBron why he decided to take his talents to South Beach!! Won’t even pass Wade the ball in the dying seconds of the game!! What a team player LeBron is!

  • http://firespo.com KING

People like jtaylor and tmoney are obviously the biggest lebron fans since they seem to forget the fact that lebron commits just as much turnovers as wade. Wade has proved that he is a way better than lebron in clutch situations.

  • Byebye

I love wade but tell me since 06 when has he been clutch
He had a motivated shaq that’s when he was doin any winning

  • MikeC.

@KING – Wade is only clutch when he’s shooting free throws against the Mavs in the 2006 Finals. I’m not a scientician, but I don’t think that’s going to happen again any time soon.

  • Cizzo

Bron is not CLUTCH! His only move is to jump into the deffender and lobby for a foul instead of trying to win the game…..

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Worse case scenario for the Heat is strife between Wade and Bron. Clearly Bron has been the facillitator this entire season and it hasn’t worked as well as they would have liked. I’m not sure if you try to change that at this point in the season or if only for the last minute of the game. One thing I agre with that LeBron said is that they are getting good looks at the end of the game, they just aren’t going in. I won’t argue who’s a better clutch player between the two, bottom line every ‘top’ clutch player misses – Jordan had a commecial where he talks about all his missed shots are what makes him great. IF this team is to become a great team, they’ll have to work through this. As Wade said, they’ll have many more situations where this will be a challenge and they’ll have to work through it. But if they start to bicker with each other and/or the coach, then that right there will stop them from being a great team.

  • FightsBearz

Maybe if they weren’t a terrible second half team, they wouldnt need someone to close the game with a winning shot? Shouldn’t it be about being ahead, and not taking the lead back with 10 seconds or less left?

  • flash

you need to get out of miami dwade, i don’t know how but you have to. i know u r buddies with LBJ but he is poison! and if miami wants LBJ to be the face of their franchise and forget about what you did for them then so be it! get out of there quick i know riley can pull it off, it’s the least he can do for you. i hate seeing you like this, d.rose used to be your prototype but now i hear them saying he’s the best 2guard from the chi?!… go play for another team dwade and use that anger that fire, big heart and the passion you showed us when everybody was writing you off, you play great with your back against the wall. you can’t do it in miami no more, not with LBJ out there taking over everything! i know you have it in you dwyane you are a proven winner, show us FLASH once again!

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I know this is a dumb question. But who is the 1st best guard from Chicago? I know both Dwade and Drose are from the chicago area and considered the 2nd/3rd best. Who is the first best though? Jordan comes to mind but he’s from Brooklyn (birth) or NC (where he grew up), so I know it’s not him.

Fact of the matter is, these games shouldn’t be coming down to the last seconds to begin with. Look at this stat line 1pt, 2rebs, 0ast 31 mins. Thats from prized free agent acquisition Mike Miller. I watched him brick two wide open 3s back to back at one point in the second half. Momentum killers. Not to put all the blame on him, but they can’t win that that type of output from their top bench guy. Their problems are way deeper than who gets the ball at the end.

With that being said, DWade had a pretty good 4th quarter and I thought for sure he was gonna have the ball at the end of the game, thats just poor coaching.

tell LeBrick to pass the Ball, Wade has more clutch made moments than misses compared to james, Spo needs to stop shoe horning this team to be brons, its wades world, wat part of wade county dont you understand?

Wade has been clutch before , including against the bulls, well 4 games in a row with bron with the ball at the end might teach them a lesson thats it dwades team

Why don’t most coaches and players in the League get this: The probability to score when there is sufficient time through set plays is way higher than isolating the star player, particularly when he settles for a jumper.

  • BostonBaller

blah blah blah..the Heat will be fine. I agree with some of what is said on both sides but come on now. Yes, I believe they need more structure from their stars during clutch time (coach can draw up a play but stars have to actually run it) Yes, the bench isn’t great but they have 3 “superstars” (their words) If LBJ can go to the finals in Cleveland then MIA should have a chance w/ their big 3. Let’s not blame the bench when 3 of your starters are allstars and 2 of them are easily top 10 or better. Blowing big leads is a big problem (I’m a C’s fan, I know about that problem) and it is critical but we never blamed or bench. LBJ can say what he wants in press conferences about not letting his team down and Wade can try to rally the troops with this us against the world stuff “the world is a little better today b/c the heat lost” . lol. It may work and if it does then their mental state is u=indeed fragile b/c no player making crazy money should need mumbo jumbo to get them motivated to play and that includes my team. The HEAT will be fine but to answer a question posed earlier..The Magic, The Knicks or any 8th seed team would like to face the Heat in the 1st round. Would an 8th seed rather play the Heat or The Magic, Knicks (streaking “right now”) or The C’s? I repeat, The Heat will be fine.

  • Luiyo

Wade should get the ball in the clutch, he has proven in the past the he’s one of the best closers in the league. LeBron never has proven this, his only two moments were flucks, getting hot in the right time (Pistons) and a lucky shot (Magic) and you could it for the way he react to it! I don’t want to get ahead of this but at this rate they could be out in the first round with Knicks. I’m not saying it because of the one game they played but right now the Heat are the three seed and the Knicks six. Think about it, they match up really well with Heat. Billups dominates the pg against Bibby, Wade is better than Fields and he’s a rookie you don’t know how is gonna play in the postseason but he can defend and with his style of play is very effective, LeBron and Melo cancel each other out because Melo’s is probably the only one in the league that can play with James without giving height and weight, and will make him work and the defensive end, Amar’e is obviously better than Bosh right now, plus the playoffs experience. The centers and bech are a toss up, coaching I think maybe and is a big maybe D’Antoni is better because he has been to deep playoffs runs. And a final question: Who you rather have to close a game Wade, Bron and Bosh or Billups, Melo and Amar’e? I would take the Knicks closers in a heartbeat. I’m NOT saying the Knicks will win the series but it should be a good one and I would not be shock if they do.

Time for Pat Riley to intervene!

  • 6marjons

dwade has been clutch in the nba finals i love lebron for his game not his attitude, but dude has never been clutch enough to win a championship, he’s one of the best in-game players there is along with people like kevin garnett, david west, james worthy even the great bill russell were great players and team leaders in many categories including heart, but would you really want them taking the final shot?
i’d pick dwyane to take the buzzer beater anyday

  • blakos

@T-Money: Lebron Turns it over as much as Wade. lebron 3.6tpg, Wade 3.3tpg.

Unless you have some stat that states Wade turns it over in big games more than Lenron. Lets not nitpick here. Wade is a closer, its his instinct. The roles need to be clarified in Miami. Let Wade do his thing.

I can’t really blame LeBron. It’s the first time he’s been on a REAL team in 7 years. He’s used to being given the ball and being expected to make the big plays. Now he has other players beside him who can help. Once he starts to work with them the HEAT will dominate. Cleveland turned LeBron into a ball hog because he basically had to or nothing would get done lol
