Pat Riley: Miami Heat Similar to ‘Showtime’ Lakers

Pat Riley coached Magic Johnson and company during the glorious “Showtime” days in Los Angeles (winning 4 titles in the ’80s), and when recruiting free agent Shane Battier to Miami, Riley made the claim that the Heat remind him of those legendary Laker teams. From ESPN: “He’s had some good times in South Florida over the years, adding a ring to the portfolio and making loads of cash. But Pat Riley’s glory days will always be those jet-black hair and thin tie years in L.A. He found himself pondering Showtime again recently when sorting through what he should do with his Heat roster heading into his second season with his Big Three. Riley was putting the full press on Shane Battier and getting LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to recruit via text messages. Part of the sale was stories about those old Lakers. In signing Battier, which the Heat finalized over the weekend, the Heat have become a team loaded with wing players. Coach Erik Spoelstra said that he envisions playing James, Wade, Battier and Mike Miller (when he recovers from hernia surgery) together at times. That’s a rare style seen more in college than the NBA. And a type that Riley often used to perfection when racking up titles with the Lakers. ‘It reminded me a little bit of what I had for nine years in Los Angeles,’ Riley said. ‘I had Magic (Johnson) and (Michael) Cooper and (Byron) Scott and (James Worthy). Basically perimeters that played all different positions. I see Shane and Mike Miller and I see Dwyane and LeBron in almost the same kind of thing. (Spoelstra) has the same opportunity.’”

over-exposure of the sun might be getting to him

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    1 center away.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Billups clears waivers at 6:00 tonight. Lebron, D-wade, and Bosh better be doing some text message recruiting with him too..

  • vctmac

    megatron you said it.
get billups on tht squad and make a run after d12 (b4 making tht run, waive of james jones and all the other bench warmers) cause if miami wants a showtime team, its their chance now. Its now or never.

  • Waggle

    Lol @ Riggs

  • T-Ray

    Cosign megatron and vctmac
Getting Billups gives them an experienced PG who can manage the egos and get the Big 3 shots. As far as getting D12 I think it’s unrealistic because wherever he goes he is going to want the ball more. Plus getting rid of the bench warmers would leave their squad high and dry if someone got hurt.

  • Sizzle

Billups to Heat would be HUGE

LMAO at Riles selling the Heat with Erik Spoelstra pulling the strings as shades of the Showtime.

  • http://averysmith.org Avery Smith

Yes if they get Billups it’s over. Plus, they don’t need a center. Bosh and Haslem make up for not having a traditional center in this kind of run-in-gun wing/slash set up offense.

I’ve warmed up to LeBron and the Heat (pun intended). Tho I’m still rooting for my Wiz and Knicks, hats off to the Heat for making intelligent moves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

Needing a dominant center on this team is overrated. The center position only really mattered in the Finals. Billups on this squad, for more than just this year, is enough. I REALLY hope this happens.

Cheryl, I’d LMFAO if Dan Gilbert claimed Billups to “mentor” Kyrie Irving, then freed B-Diddy to go run and gun with the Knicks.

  • LA Huey

Hoping the Billups acquisition is actually realistic. Regarding Dwight, I think he actually dislikes Wade and Bron. He’d probably rather stay in Orlando than play for Miami.

  • LA Huey

I kinda agree that the Heat’s need for a center is overrated. They didn’t really even need a better center against Dallas, just a normal LeBron James.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

don’t need anything but a point guard that can actually control the flow of the offense on the court, and for Spo to actually try to draw up some plays for them to run offensively….for the most part, like Phil said, they play videogame basketball….doesn’t win championships, but they should look a lot better this year…..SHOULD

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Pat is wrong; Joel Anthony is 100x better than Kareem….oh wait.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Does Erik Spoelstra realize that the Showtime Lakers ran the whole game? Cuz the Heat already play at too slow a pace. I’ve been hearing they are going to pick up the pace since last December. It’s been 12 months.

  • capostat

What in the world did Riley refer to James Worth as, that his full name had to be bracketed? “That other dude”?. LOL.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

lol, capostat, I watched the actual press conference and he said “worthy”. Not sure why they bracketed the whole name

  • capostat

    alright gotcha megatron… #RileyAlzheimers

  • Jay

sign Iverson and let him and Billups switch nights during this 66game swing. Neither of them can handle this schedule. Cut it in half for them!

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Also, Eddy Curry is not fat anymore. He actually looks good so hopefully he can contribute this year. He seems pretty serious about it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

“Veteran guard Chauncey Billups is crossing his fingers in hopes he will clear waivers at 6 p.m. EST Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. If he clears waivers, a Yahoo! source says to keep an eye on the Los Angeles Lakers or Miami Heat as possible destinations.”

  • Kilo

What the Lkaers should do, flip Bynmun and Pau for D-How, sign Chuencey and pick up a shooter and wing defender.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Disagree with Riley on this one. The Heat play too slow a pace to be compared to the 80s Lakers and LeBron is not Magic despite a similar skill-set.

  • Nella

If Riley’s talking about wings who can play multiple positions, while not needing a true PG, then he should be comparing them to the 90′s bulls.

  • shutup

they have eddy curry and if hes really lost the weight and is motivated they have a legit 7 footer with billups running the point i think the calming influence in the fourth quarter would be invaluable

BREAKING NEWS: Marc Stein reporting the BOBCATS CONSIDERING BA BA BIDDING ON BILLUPS! LOL!!!!! I hope MJ will “just do it.” F Chauncey for crying about getting waived after the Knicks did him a favor picking up the last year of his contract for 14.2 million dollars.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Gilbert Arenas passed through waivers. He is actually a free agent, and making $20M from the Magic this season ontop of whatever new contract he signs. idk about y’all, but I personally would rather have an inshape Gilbert Arenas at 28 then the majority of these other Free Agent Point Guards. Gilbert in NY would be very very very interesting (imo)

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

nbk, I thought the amnesty worked like magic would have to pay him 20m if he didnt sign with anyone, but whatever new deal he signs, the team that signs him pays whatever portion of that 20m they sign him for. So if he signed with the knicks for 3 million for example, knicks would pay him 3 mil and magic would pay 17? am I wrong in this?

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

and ORANGE, I read a article today that said that bobcats were considering it but now they aren’t anymore

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

You are not wrong, that is the rule but only if the player is picked up on Waivers. IF they pass through waivers (which Arenas did) they become a literal Free Agent, and their new contract is ontop of their amnestied deal, instead of a fraction of it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

    ahh gotcha

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

nbk, i’m a big fan of Gil, so I for sure think he’s a great pick up. We know what that cat is capable of. Hoping the Lakers sign him if they are not able to get a better PG.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Come on dan gilbert, people already think you’re a douche, show them how a real douche operates by signing billups.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

^ this was me, Damn you slam!

BREAKING NEWS: Source says “looking promising” that Baron Davis gets waived and ends up w/ Knicks.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lakeshow, how ready are you to go attack Jim Buss?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    ….wooow Slam

  • andxxx

I feel like this is a ploy by Stern basically saying if CP3 leaves the Hornets and goes to a big market the only way he can is by taking a massive paycut. He is screwing him and something about this screams injustice and corruption.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

nbk. I can answer that. Ive been wanting to slap the dogsh*t out of Jimmy Buss.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Wear gloves homie, you don’t want that stink on you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Maaaan, I wanna go Sonny Corleone on Jimmy Buss

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I’m cool with him after we net Dwight and another good pick up or two…. If that doesn’t happen…. I honestly might go into a shell for a while…. Such an absolutely crazy start to the new NBA.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

If we get Dwight, good. If we don’t??? I don’t even know

  • eZ

Heat need a strong offensive assistant coach, cause the squad might be showtime but the coach is more like slowtime. And he needs to cut back on minutes for bron and wade…there is a reason bron sucked at the end of games in the regular and finals and that’s at least one of them.

  • ClydeSays

Uh, Pat gets much respect, but this Heat team isn’t the Showtime Lakers. The Heat line up is def. talented, but comparing them to a Hall Of Fame coach, Kareem, Magic, Worthy plus Green, Rambis, Scott, etc. doesn’t make sense.

If this Heat team racks up 3 chips with Spo at the helm, then we can talk….

  • Cool Dude

He is underselling the role of Kareem on the showtime.

  • Rainman

They dont got a Magic, nor a Kareem…so how so? Dont tell me LeBron is the Magic of the team, yeah, she’s 6’9, he can handle the ball, yeah he can pass, but he should be the one getting the passes in the fast break and finishing them off, using his unreal athleticism, they need a PG to do this. Also obvz that center is needed, Eddy Curry? yeah, right. No disrespect to dude tho, he’s done himself well showing he has enough to get bak to the league. Chauncey is Chauncey, a good leader non the less, but he isnt gonan run a “showtime” type offence, liek lets be real. Thats the exact reason he didnt fit in Mike D’aintoni’s offence all that well… Dwayne isnt a PG, his rookie season proved it, a much better playter when he can focus on scoring, not distributing…So all in all, Riley’s been smokin that good stuff.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

A more fluid offensive flow is more on how Spo can create plays that incorporates/maximize his players abilities on that side of the floor, rather than a guy who controls the flow. If you believe Billups would spell difference, I think you’re half-wrong and half-right. I don’t mind having him there. Sure he could help, but I believe that it should be more of player adjusments rather than change of personnel. Besides imo, Rio could fill that void. He still has potential.
On the other hand, Joel Anthony is what he is.

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

The lineup is just as scary as it was last year, and there were flashes of showtime fastbreaks finished with some serious alley-oops Magic could only dream about. But before we say this is the “Showtime” Lakers I need to see a championship this year, or at least a few years of sustained excellence.

  • David

i Think Maybe if Chris Paul Was smart enough he would go to the magic and play with dwight howard instead of making all these ridicoulus moves to LA

  • Zabbah

Spoelstra’s days are numbered. Riley basically admitted to it.

  • Justin

Why would Spoelstra’s days be numbered after only one year with this team? That’s ridiculous
