Dwyane Wade to Miss Olympic Games Following Knee Surgery

There were fears immediately following the NBA season that Dwyane Wade might have to miss the Olympics due to left knee surgery. Today, those fears were realized. Reports the AP: “The Miami Heat guard called USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski on Thursday to break the news, which was not totally unexpected after Wade played through pain in the postseason. He appeared in all 23 Heat playoff games despite the knee problems, averaging 22.6 points during Miami’s five-game win over Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals. ‘I’ve decided to listen to my doctors and get the procedure I need on my knee,’ Wade said. ‘USA Basketball said I had to do what was best for me. They want me to be obviously as healthy as possible so I can continue to play this game at a high level. They were very supportive and told me if I ever want to come around the team, I’m welcome and that I’m part of the family.’ Wade and his doctors are in the process of scheduling the surgery. Wade has been told it will be basically a ‘cleanup’ procedure and should have him on crutches for only about a day afterward. If all goes according to plan, Wade will be ready for the start of training camp with the Heat this fall. [...] Wade’s departure leaves 17 players in the mix for 12 spots on the U.S. Olympic team. That group convenes in Las Vegas next week to start training camp, then has five exhibitions with international teams before opening Olympic play against France on July 29. Wade was the leading scorer for the U.S. team on its way to gold at the Beijing Games four years ago, and he hoped to be part of defending that title in London. But after meeting with doctors, Wade realized surgery was inevitable and delaying it until after the Olympics would seriously jeopardize his chance of being ready for the start of Miami’s championship defense.”

how serious is this..he can not do the kobe procedure..if it is just a “clean up” as stated and he is only on crutches for a day why cant he just go to Germany..seems a lot less invasive to me. worked for mamba..should work for him?? his knee must be really messed up and a “clean up” is a lot more serious than advertised!

Damn!!! D-wade, D-Rose and Howard are going to miss. I was looking forward to seeing this years Olympic with some of the best talent ever assembled.

Might as well hand over the gold to the Spaniards. Kobe, the 8th best shooting guard in the WCF is old and over the hill. Dwade is out. The greatest center of this decade is likely out. The most humble point guard is out. And when USA basketball will cry out to Lebron to save us..and he will whisper …”No.” Send in Mario Chalmers! Champion at every level.

USA will be fine. Even without Wade Rose or Howard. There are alot of players that can fill the spot. Melo, James, Curry, KD, Gay, Westbrook, CP3, all will still be there among others. USA will be fine. NICK…who is better than kobe at the 2 spot? (not just in the WC but in the entire L)….i would love to know.

The US Olympic team is taking more hits than Tina Turner in the 70′s

As long as they have the Durantula, USA will be fine. He single handedly carried the offensive load in the 2010 World Championships.

Kobe is the 8th best shooting guard in the What? I cant think of him being 8th best anywhere.

Kobe, Lebron, Durant, CP3, Deron = GOLD

Kobe is still a beast and they will look to him in the 4th just like last olympics. Luxury they have now is that they got young-clutch players in Durant and CP3. Lebron is playing at a high level. If the bigs play decent they will win easier than ’08

If you’ve been around Slam long enough, you should know that lots of folks here actually believe that Monta Ellis and Eric Gordon are better than Bean.

monte is probably top 5…no way is eric gordon anywhere close to mamba even when mamba was playing on 1 leg in the 10-11 season…kb will lead this team like 08…nuff said!
as per wade as i said..6-8 weeks seems to me a lot more than a “clean up”. not a doc but that seems a lot more serious if he can not do the germany procedure!

First names beginning with ‘D’ are getting hit. Derrick, Dwyane, Dwight..is Deron next? (I hope not).

I still have Kobe as a top 15 Shooting Guard in the L. Definitely top 8 in the WC.

Big deal. It’s not like he wanted to play anyway. He wanted to get paid to play. Pff!
