The Denver Nuggets Want to Play ‘Smashmouth Basketball’

The days of carelessly flying up and down the court in Denver have come to an end, says head coach Brian Shaw. The Nuggets are going to get tough and nasty this season, according to Shaw. Per the Denver Post: “No more wimpy basketball. The Nuggets have a new way to play. ‘Smashmouth basketball,’ new Denver coach Brian Shaw said. I asked Shaw to define his terms. What qualifies as smashmouth basketball? ‘Smashmouth means that you are literally going to get your mouth smashed if you’re going against us for a rebound or a loose ball,’ Shaw said. ‘We want to have a nasty disposition, both offensively and defensively.’ [...] ‘The style of play … is going to be a little different than what it has been around here for the past few years,’ Shaw said. ‘We do still want to take advantage of getting up and down the floor and take advantage of the climate and the altitude. But, with that being said, the teams I’ve been associated both as a player and as a coach have had success establishing a presence inside, executing in half court and having a defensive identity, as well as being a good rebounding team.’”

The only problem is that outside of Faried and JJ Hickson, the Nuggetts don’t have any guys with a nasty disposition. When the Shock Exchange was kid he wanted to date Lola Falana, too bad he didn’t have the game to match his desire.

LOL, JJ Hickson has a nasty disposition? are you just judging him by his face or something? that guy is a teddy bear, and a bottom 5 defensive starting frontcourt player in the league.
    .
JJ Hickson’s style of defense is more hugmouth. If you had to use some kind of mouth analogy.

The Shock Exchange was being kind. Hickson and Faried are the only two guys with the physicality to play smashmouth basketball. SE thinks that Shaw will shortly find out why Denver played a finesse, uptempo style last year.

SE, just out of curiosity here. How often do you slip up while making comments and type in 1st persona and then catch and correct yourself?

  • shockexchange

About as often as you slip up and speak 3rd person.

Definitely agreed. He may just be talking tough to try and get his team in that mentality or something idk.

SE thinks Shaw actually believes what he’s saying. It may be best to play smash mouth basketball. However, the typical coach has to play the style that is conducive to his personnel. Typical NBA coaches don’t have the embarrassment of riches the Lakers have had over the past two decades. Shaw was spoiled in L.A. In Denver, he’s gonna get introduction to the real world.

well Shaw has been in Indiana for the last few years….i think he wants to bring their style of play over to Denver. i don’t think this has anything to do with LA whatsoever.

  • shockexchange

Agreed about the style. But he’s very naive if he thinks he can wave a magic wand and attract personnel to fit the style he wants to play (a la LA). It’s pretty obvious that the personnel he currently has can’t play smash mouth.

This sounds like when Kurt Rambis tried bringing the triangle offense to the Wolves. Just isn’t going to work with the personnel.

which is why i think he’s just trying to instill a mindset. even if they aren’t a smashmouth team by nature, it won’t hurt them to play more aggressively, even if they don’t actually qualify as “smashmouth”

“Smashmouth Basketball” ?!?! Really in these concussion weary days of sports entertainment. SMH…this is a gimmick, a selling point and one truly beneath that of Brian Shaw. Sure Coach B….put out there a bunch of Rick Mahornes, Bruce Bowens, (recently admitted) Jalen Roses, and (most recently) Dahntay Joneses, and you’ll get the Mike Brown treatment A.S.A.P.

  • LakeShow

    Ehh, good luck.

Nate Robinson can play like that. McGee, maybe. Faried, sure. Hickson, not really. Ty Lawson no way… Galinari, nope.

No one else has that gritty style of play on this team besides Andre Miller who will only see 20mpg.

Smashmouth Basketball doesn’t mean beating the hell out of your opponent and handing out concussions. Obviously his statement about “knocking people in the mouth” was unnecessary but in this case it means the Nuggets are trying to abandon their run and gun mentality and replace it with a more defensive rugged mindset.
