Top 50: Tony Parker, no. 15

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Adam Sweeney

Look up the word envy and you will see it is described as a noun originating from France that expresses a feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another. Ask me to use it in a sentence and I can give you a few.Tony Parker For example, I envy the speed and teardrop floater that Tony Parker shows off every night he plays. You could also say I, a Houston Rockets fan, envy how many titles Tony Parker has helped lead the San Antonio Spurs to in his career. And it should go without saying that any sane individual must envy Parker for his relationship with a certain Desperate Housewife. It’s only fitting that both the word being dissected and the player in focus come from the same country.

Let’s step back a few sentences and clarify a point of discussion. You might be thinking, “Tony Parker didn’t lead S.A. to multiple titles. That was Tim Duncan.” You’d be partially right. Tim has unquestionably cemented himself as the greatest power forward of all-time. Without him the Spurs don’t have a dynasty. But there is a lack of respect that the point guard position receives, none more understanding of this notion than Parker. It wasn’t Tony’s job to take the last shot. That was Timmy’s job. Until recently, it has always been Parker’s job to defer. And while Duncan stepped into the spotlight from day one of his NBA career, there is a certain beauty to the way Parker’s game has grown over the years, so much so that it shouldn’t be surprising if Parker supplants Duncan this season as the franchise player in San Antonio.

To study the timeline of Parker’s career is an exercise in maturity. He was a player that was initally dismissed by Gregg Popovich in a workout because he couldn’t handle the physical nature of the NBA game. Nothing has come easy for Parker. He had to figure out how to craft his style of play. He’s been in Pop’s doghouse plenty of times, even to the point where he was warned not to shoot 3′s. But every season that we see Parker, there is a new facet to his game. He’s not perfect but neither are we. Have any of us not been chastised by a coach for firing outside of our range? Parker is a player worth celebrating because he is the best of us. He has had to weather the same hardships every talented baller with a touch of recklessness had to endure, the difference being that he found a way to put it together. Parker’s growth as an NBA player is what we wish we could have achieved, if only we had that speed, that elusiveness, that… sorry, here comes the enviousness again.

It is only a matter of time before you see an ESPN header that reads “The French-ise” with Parker’s smiling mug underneath it. There’s no accounting for taste in headlines but it is time that we start accounting for Parker in terms of importance to the Spurs and the league in general. He’s already become the first European player to win an NBA Finals MVP, and Parker had career highs last season in points per game and assists, at 22.0 and 6.9 respectively. As Manu Ginobili and Duncan enter perhaps the twilight of their careers, which is strange to hear myself say, Parker is hitting his prime.

Anyone who questions this notion can go back to the 4-1 series loss the Spurs suffered at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks. Tony dropped 28.6 a game on Dallas even though the Mavericks knew he and Duncan were the only two players worth guarding on the Spurs. Try convincing me Michael Finley was a threat. You have a better chance of arguing that Paul Blart: Mall Cop deserves an Academy Award. It takes a special player to slash through a defense that is waiting for him. Parker is that player.

Ask someone to name the best point guards in the NBA and you almost assuredly will hear the names of Chris Paul, Steve Nash and Deron Williams listed first. How many rings do those guys have between them? Nada. Parker has three to his name. If he wins this year, and the Spurs have to be considered a serious contender with the acquisitions of Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess, maybe Parker will be generous enough to keep one ring for himself and give one a piece to the aforementioned PGs on the list.

You can argue that Parker’s outside game is sorely lacking, that his jump shot can be inconsistent at times and that he has been blessed with exceptional talent around him. I’ll give you the first two contentions but you can’t blame a player for being placed on an organization that understands the importance of chemistry, balance and depth. And talent doesn’t equal championships. I submit the Phoenix Suns for your consideration. At the end of the day it is all about winning and right now there isn’t a point guard in the league with the amount of talent and rings to match Tony Parker.

In the same way that the New England Patriots don’t measure success by number of magazine front covers or jersey sales, the Spurs all understand that legacies are measured by championships. Based upon that criteria, Parker’s legacy rises higher than Vince Carter did in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. Parker said it best. “When there is talk about the best point guards, sometimes they don’t talk about me. But that’s not my main motivation. They can talk about Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Deron Williams and Chris Paul. I still have the most rings.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Parker at 15 is about right when considering all positions for this ranking. However, pure PG rankings would have to put Parker at 1, not because of his rings but for his skill. This is easy as Parker has played against and beaten many of the other great PG’s of the league in head-to-head match ups, when it has counted: Playoffs. When the Spurs played the Jazz a couple years back D-Will put up a fight but Parker ended up carving up the Jazz D; Spurs win series. Remember that Epic 7 game series with Paul and the Hornets? Yeah, then you would remember Parker besting Paul and taking the Spurs to the finals. Steve Nash? Pfft, not even in the same League as Parker otherwise he would have found a way to lead the Suns past the Spurs at some point in their losing streak to the great Spurs Machine. Go up and down the list of great PG’s v Tony Parker and people will realize that sure Tony won’t win them all but when it matters most Tony smokes them all. Go Spurs Go!

Greek Dude…1)you obviously haven’t hit your prime yet. Let that marinate. 2)YOU-of all people-shouldn’t be commenting on anyone’s spelling. That would be the epitome of hypocritical. 3)Allenp is way cooler than you. Hell, nbk, kobesbestfriend, & wayno are too. We entertain your comments-and don’t go postal on you-because you actually make most of the other oft-ridiculed posters look SMARTER. 4)I’m sure you’re gonna spend like 20 minutes formulating a comeback…

Really? 15th. After the 08/09 season he had, scratch that, he celebrated. I have only a few relevant stats from the last season in my head, mainly because i don’t wanna waste cells memorizing mundane Nba Stats, and because most ot the best performances don’t really stay vivid…except for Tony Parker dropping 55 Points and 10 assists on the Wolves in November. on the same night Amaré(sic) had 47&19 against Milwaukee i think. 55 & 10. Then he got injured for a while, then he came back and proceeded to continue his rampage. And that gets him the 15th spot. You see, i love the Dirkster’s game, so i usually root for the Mavs, and over the years against Tony Parker. But last season, he just tore it up, and even during the spurs lame playoff run (if you can call it that) against Dallas, Tony was untouchable. i truly enjoy watching him play, he was on another level at Eurobasket a few weeks ago. True star. Hardware’s there, legacy is building up, Hottie Wife? check. New proven Teammates plus Slam putting him below Deron? I think Tony Toni Toné’s gonna be out for blood this season.

    thankyou?

  • J-Ro

does this mean that Robert Horry can argue he’s among the best power forwards of all time just becuase he has more rings than all the others?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

and before y’all go off stating the “Nostradamus criteria” of this year’s Top 50 to me, to discredit my post above, i..don’t…care. The groundrules for making this year’s top 50 are bogus in my humble opinion. I’ll stick to “performance in the past season” if you don’t mind. Now everyone carry on with the “Greek dude” bashing. (Antonis, when will you learn, let it be, man.)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Tavoris
I was reading some of Greek dude’s old posts from the last Top 50.
He revealed that he used to stan for Iverson at Georgetown, but was turned off once AI got to the league.
Unrequited love drives some folks crazy.

  • http://slamonline.com 360vue

i respect parker, partially because he never got the credit he deserved for the last five years, and partially because of whom he goes home to bed every night. however top 15 is too much, i wouldnt even consider him in the top 20 players in the NBA let alone 15 (and i know this article is about projections so i will digress), and as the article mentions, there are at least 3 other better points (CP3, DWill, Nash)in the league and, let alone the four other positions to consider. and his stats arent going to be in the top 15. Even if he gets 22/7 again, thats it, he offers very little on the boards and hes lucky to get more than a steal a game, cant see those stats as being top 15 in production value. Lets be honest, 22 points is probably just under top 20 league leaders. 7ish assists, is probably around top 15 in the L. And initially the ranking might seem concrete, but it isnt; boards/blocks and steals are far more important in a game, not only because of their critical value but their psychological impact upon the opposition. Anyway, not to take anything away from Parker, who is undeniably impressive, but Ginobli missed most of last season, and giving the ball to Duncan in the low area isnt really an assist, its a freakin certainty. Your 09/10 projections seem a bit whack, you can’t knock 22 P/6.9 A/3 R/1 S, but that isnt top 15 in the L surely?!?!

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS

@Darksaber…:i generally agree on your TP take. What about Alba against Marousi? I excpect a hardfought game on Sunday (p.s. i will never learn!! this would be missing all the fun here!! )
    @tavoris&Allenp….: i love you both.

  • tavoris

360vue, Parker does it in less minutes, on less shots, and had a greater impact on the game than most PF’s (because he gets to the line so much). Steals are overrated. The Spurs have been a completely dominant defensive team over the last 12 or 13 years, and their best ball-thief (Manu) has only averaged 1.5 steals.

  • UnRel

Tony Parker got game. The number of rings is used to seperate the elite ballers.. you can’t bring D-Fish into the conversation because he’s not an elite player.. period.. the reason for the ring count is to seperate the best.. from the best.. not the Horrys from the Barkleys.. it’s used to seperate the Barkleys from the Duncans.. come on folks.. thought you knew.. tony parker is a legit PG.. possibly top 3 in the L right now..

  • tavoris

Allenp…I truly don’t understand how he could be turned off. Maybe some kid crossed him up DECENT when he was wearing the Answer 1′s, and that made him Anti-Iverson. Who knows…maybe he can enlighten us. Lemme google & see how Victor Page is doing…

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

Tavoris: Of course you wouldn’t understand how one can be turned off, you probably french kiss your AI poster when you sleep every night.
Look, this is coming from me, ME, so take this to heart guys: Nash can NOT get buckets like Parker can get buckets. It’s not close. It never was.

  • tavoris

Jukai, how did I know you were gonna come in here? If you haven’t noticed, I am a fan of ALL NBA players…AI get’s the most hate in here (except when there’s a Rubio article), so I defend him the most, but the love is equally spread. And I don’t need to make feeble attempts at insult to make myself look smart (are you watching, Greek dude?), or to cover for your apparent inability to separate fact from opinion. So, save the crap for all the people who > you in real life.

  • tavoris

Jukai, you missed the meat of the discussion. There was more that was implied-like, the fact that the most vehement NBA hater used to be a STAN-and if you bothered to read, you’d see that it was a response to the person whom the message was addressed.

  • tavoris

Steve Nash actually CAN get buckets like Parker. The separation is because of Nash’s abysmal defense and the high number of turnovers, but not because of scoring ability. If Nash took 6 more shots a game, he’d be right at 22 pts as well.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
    Prickly.

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

Tavoris: and if Parker took six more shots, he’d be at 30. It’s not close. Nash is a “smart” scorer. He’s efficient. Parker gets buckets.

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

Tavoris, you are to AI like Myles is to Kobe. I take little of what you say to heart when that subject comes up.
Plus you’re trolling Spanny hardcore. It’s against the rules, bud.

  • Afonso

this is a fair spot for TP although DWill should be right next to it…KEVIN DURANT WILL BE EVEN IN A MORE OVERATED SPOT THAN ROSE IF HE IS TOP 10!!!STILL LAUGHING ROSE WAS 17

  • Jufu

Just curious. Did Calderon not make the Top 50? That sucks.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Whoa wtf. the person who posted as Jufu was me. I don’t know why it showed up as Jufu though…

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Nash can get buckets he dropped 48 on memphis in the playoffs , he would just rather play smart basketball. He would get his 22 more efficiently actually.

  • lou

Derek Fisher? John Salley? What are you guys talking about? Has John salley ever scored double digits? He was good in bad boys 2, but cmon. Derek fisher is a role player. Tony Parker is a star. Finals MVP, Kobe just got his first last year so imagine how elusive that is. Tony Parker has to balance when to go “off” and when to defer. Driving the lane on a team that posts up the majority of its plays isn’t easy. Dudes resume is impeccable, and do i have to remind people a couple seasons ago he lead the league in points in the paint.

  • http://www.yahoo.com christian wells

    I’m thinkin who r the next 14plyrs

  • tavoris

Jukai…read the threads…the only time I’ve mentioned him (without provocation) is when a Euro team got their asses whupped by an NBA team. Hardly trolling, when he’s called me “his kid”. Additionally, I defend EVERY NBA PLAYER. If you have never played at a high level, then you’d understand how tough the NBA game is. And the difference is that Parker takes 17 shots a game, whereas Nash takes 11. Nash’s abilities as a scorer have NEVER been in question, so I don’t know why you decided to bring it up. As I stated before, we have very little to talk about, since you are STILL unable to separate your opinion from fact…and we all know the saying about opinions…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Bryan
How can you argue that Tony Parker is inefficient if he shoots over 50 percent from the field, from the guard spot, and gets 22 points a game?
    No following that logic.
Personally, I think Nash could score 22-25 a game if he was really gunning, but I understand Jukai’s point.
Parker has a scorer’s mentality all the time, while Nash is more of a traditional point guard on offense. HE can score when you test him, but he’d rather just run the show. Parker is constantly looking to tear your heart out.
As for his effectivness versus Iverson, you cannot discount the fact that when he drives the lane, big men would have to leave the greatest power forward of all time to come stop him.

  • Afonso

Jose had a bad year,he could be a top10 PG…next should be LeBeast»Kobe»Flash»CP3»D12»Dirk»B7Roy»Timmy»KG»Durant»DWill» and 3 guys im forgeting… I just had a crazy moment..Mo Williams and Jameer wont be here right??!

  • tavoris

Afonso, Jameer already was up here…45 or something like that

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Bryan
My bad, you didn’t say Parker was inefficient, you said Nash could do what he does more efficiently.
Not sure if that’s true, but it’s different from what I thought you said.

  • Afonso

can somebody tell me 3 guys i didnt mentioned? please no Mo Williams, who should have been 50 or smthing..

Redd didn’t make the list. Booser was already listed. Duncan and Durant are higher, Gerald Wallace was already listed, or not included at all.
Kobe and Lebron will be 1,2, can’t have it any other way.

FOR THE RECORD: As everyone who has been on this site for at least 5 years knows. I am the biggest Kobe supporter here. But we know he isn’t dropping 35.7 ppg this year. So he is a little lower … I would put him number one but I am bias!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    Is that a good list?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

that was an exceptionally well-written article, whether one agrees with the content or not. Any English teacher would be proud (Mr Rubenstein?)

^Why is Sheldon Williams in there?

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Hm, I love TD’s game like any other… but UNQUESTIONABLY CEMENTED as the greatest 4? I don’t know about that. I like to think Karl Malone vs Duncan is a legitimate debate.

  • Afonso

THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE BUT I´M GUESSING THEY OVERATE DURANT A LOT… Lbj»Kobe»Flash»CP3»D12»Dirk»Melo»BRoy»Timmy»KG»Bosh»DWill»Durant…and 1 mistery fella

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

And Parker should be higher than Gasol. Lakers + Rings generates too much love here… far too much. Gasol has virtually identical numbers as last year, save 1.5boards more, half a block less, and lower fg%. He was 31 last year. Now he’s going to be 14th best at the minimum? Does his ring last year somehow forecast an improved performance for this upcoming year? Hm….

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS

@Jukai…..: don’t worry about tavoris trolling me, i (generally) do not respond to him. I have this ‘thing’ with people that “I” think that are not intelligent…call it how you want but even in real life i usually don’t spend much time with guys that i consider below average, i get bored (i know this ain’t good, but that’s how i am…).Some of ‘my kids’ here might be at the same level with tavoris (always according to MY personal judgment) or even lower but AT LEAST they are writting things in their own personal way which(combined with their afformentioned talent) gives a usually hilarious result (Eboy,Allenp,Tadone,Hursty,Betcats, etc). Tavoris (usually) is praising like god every player that is considered a superstar by the mainstream media and cannot observe weaknesses that anybody who has played this game easily can. His comments ,plain&simple, are too boring (once again this is just my opinion). You can ‘talk’ as much as you want with him ,trust me, you will never hear anything new or “interesting/brain challenging”. At the same time, some months ago i remember you spend many hours trying to establish communication with the legendary Teddy and you gave up only after “THE KING” didn’t manage to construct a complete preposition after 3 hours. So, go on with tavoris, maybe you are more lucky with him , i don’t have your patience, sorry.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Mystery person is Pau Gasol! And wow, when you guys kept saying “Williams” I completely thought Mo williams and then thought HELLNAW.

  • http://www.utjazzblog.com Utah Jazz Blog

This ranking seems about right. You could argue whether or not he should be higher than Billups, but I can’t really dispute this one.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS

Ranking the rest of the guys as WORLD PLAYERS (not JUST their NBA regular season potential): 1)KOBE 2)DURANT 3)DIRK 4)GASOL 5)DERON 6)WADE 7)MELO 8)DUNKAN 9)LEBRON 10)GARNETT 11)BOSH 12)CP3 13)HOWARD 14)ROY. (being able to shoot the ball is-was-will be the number one element in bball).

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Allen you got what I was saying its all good its hard to follow the way people type sometimes. But nash shoots a higher percentage from everywhere and hits double the 3′s so he would be taking less shots to get 22 ppg which makes him more efficient in my book. The fact that he put up 19 and a 11 like 2 seasons ago makes me think one more layup and a free throw wouldn’t have been hard to come by if he was looking for it.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

“what do you think about when you hear the words ‘michael jordan’? that’s right, steve nash.”
