Top 50: Brandon Roy, no. 11

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Sean Ceglinsky

There’s a lot to like about Brandon Roy’s game. Dude is about as well-rounded as they come. He’s one of those a jack of all trades types, a cat you definitely want on your team, but definitely despise having to play against more than a handful of times over the course of an NBA season.

Roy can score, seemingly at will, when he puts his mind to it. He’s not afraid to mix it up inside either, down low in the Brandon Royblock against the best big men in the League. Roy is unselfish with the rock in his hands too. And believe it or not, he gets after things on the defensive end of the floor.

By most accounts, he’s the face of the Portland Trail Blazers. Roy has been largely, although not solely, responsible for helping to clean up the image of the franchise. Remember, not long ago, the Trail Blazers were known as the Jail Blazers. Times were, indeed, tough in the Pacific Northwest.

With Roy in the mix, order has been restored, and rightfully so.

Taking all of these things into consideration, it’s makes complete sense that Roy checks in at the No. 11 in the SLAMonline Top 50.

About the only knock on him is that he’s tended to be a tad bit injury prone in the past, otherwise a strong case could be made for him cracking the Top 10.

For those who aren’t believers in BRoy and are looking for further proof of his upper echelon play, one need not look any further than his consistent statistics during his four-year career. He’s averaged at least 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game in each season. In our book, that’s getting it done, straight up, on a nightly basis. The numbers don’t lie.

In his first year, he averaged 16.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per night en route to winning the Rookie of the Year award.

For an encore, he averaged 19.1 points, 4.7 boards and 5.8 dimes in his second season. The third time around, Roy averaged 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists. Last year, he finished with averages of 21.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

What’s not to like about that kind of production?

Four years later, Roy has three NBA All-Star games on his resume, which is looking rather nice these days. And there’s no reason to think that he’s not capable of adding another selection to his growing list when the festivities take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles this season.

Again, if not for some bad luck with the injury bug, he has yet to play a full 82-game season, we’d most likely be arguing about Roy’s inclusion in Top 10 of this list. Then again, there’s always next year’s SLAMonline’s Top 50. Our guess is, he’ll take the next step sooner rather than later. If the past is any indication of what’s in store for the future, things appear promising.

not too bad of a ranking. hope he isn’t injured this year like the whole blazers team. blazers have so much potential but always manage to be underwhelming

  • hoodsnake

If it wasn’t for those damn injuries he would be top 10 every year till he hangs them up. Mad underrated

  • T-Money

First off, let me start by saying that B-Roy is a bad mutha. Now, I have two gripes with him: 1- He should be a 25+ ppg dude now. He belongs to that echelon and I felt he kind of stagnated last year. At 37 mpg, I expect him to shoot 10 or so FTs every game. Which brings me to my second point. 2- The guy is an athletic freak (trust me or youtube, whichever) but doesn’t use his gifts enough. I like how methodical and precise he is with his offensive moves but sometimes a dude just gotta sweep the ball and SMASH on cats.

  • smooth

slow down eboy haha. this is a good spot for him this year he’s and thats he did chang the trailblazers and if he stays healthy and aldridge plays like he should be doing, and so for miller too they could be something special. the trail blazers are a under the radar kind of team

@T-Money: I’m not sure I agree with you on his athleticism. No, he’s certainly not a stiff, but at the same time, he doesn’t have that kind of explosiveness, he really doesn’t jump all that high, and his game is similar to his personality/demeanor, laid back. The PPG’s, I’ll agree with to a degree as well as the FTA’s since both are indicative of him not being aggressive in attacking the rim and shooting a ton of jumpers.

I always think its funny the way players thay have had many injuries are labeled. Guys that have not done much in their career, or are not extremely well liked are considered injury prone (Oden, Iverson, even Donavan McNabb). But guys that have proven themselves are just considered unlucky. Just something i’ve noticed. Unless you look like Robert Trailer or Sheed in the later years….isnt each unrelated injury just unlucky?

Won’t go like this, but let’s try it

yeah he is a good player, but dont use stats to make the case…i mean 21/5/4 on a average/good team isnt exactly earth shattering, he looks a little out of place this high to me…can someone say exactly what makes him 7 spots better than joe johnson (who from a quick glance at the list is the closest to roy in terms of stat lines)?

What does Kobe have to do for SLAM to finally acknowledge him as #1?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Agreed with Michael, his stats are nearly identical to Tyreke Evans yet Roy is what, 11 spots higher? It’s the winning/leadership aspect that separates BRoy. That said, this is still a tad high.

  • Ben

based on last years production….”solely”…you think al jefferson is over zach randolph?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I think if you interchange B. Roy for Joe Johnson, the Hawks become a better team bc of Roys clutchness & and leadership (intangibles). He also doesn’t settle for jumpers like JJ either. Also, the guy played in the playoffs a week after having knee surgery…RIDICULOUS

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

YES!!! DWill is top ten this year. About time.

  • Shan

But Roy isnt really a winner or a leader, in my opinion. He hasnt won a playoff series and he cant will his team to do so until he does either of those things he will continue to hover around the star status, not quite superstar status. Portland needs a leader and he isnt it. Sorry.

    Next up:

    Dirk.

(I have predicted the past 4 rankings correctly.)

DWill should have been top ten at least two years ago. He does so much for his team, I should know. I remember when everyone would argue with me about how CP was miles ahead of DWill and how Roy was better beacause he was selected to the all star team and DWill wasnt. Haha. It feels good to be right.

  • All net

Love watching the blazers play! Really hope they can put it together this year.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Brandon Roy should have cracked the top ten. He’s a sleeper to win MVP this season IMO. His statline isn’t so impressive but he can light it up when he needs to, he just plays very well within the team is all. Reke’s numbers were on Sacramento where he had the green light to put up any shot he wants, no comparison really.

Wait a minute… so yall basically went on and ripped the a-hole out from bosh for not getting out of the first round or even going to the playoffs (playoffs due to injury last season, crappy team the season b4) yet you are going to give brandon roy a pass for not getting out of the first round for the same reasons? see this is why i can’t take some of yall seriously. Roy is constantly injured and when given his shot didn’t perform well vs. the rockets. he was injured last yr and his team only made the playoffs in the west bc he has a GREAT supporting cast. yet we are going to call roy a winner/leader? what has he seriously won? season games? those clearly don’t count for bosh or anyone for that matter. so what has he really lead? the injury reserve? ok… see look. i have NO PROBLEM with roy being #11 on this list. HOWEVER bosh had a much better yr last yr when u look @ the numbers. If you are going to put roy @ number 11 with the season (or lackthereof) he had last yr than how the hell are you going to criticise the bosh pick? seems BIASED to me since again bosh had a much better individual yr in almost every single way.

SLAM is so f()cked up today, anyone else posting as other people, and having a hard time seeing somments?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I love BRoy. One of my faves. Star for real. I guess last year’s series validated Roy’s heart for the game..The only hurdle to a Portland deep playoff run? 1. Health 2. Lamarcus Aldridge.. Pls LA, you have all the tools in you, please take the next step.

  • BH

Sorry, I don’t understand this ranking. If someone could give me an evidence-based explanation, that’d be helpful because, based on the evidence, I see virtually no diffence between Joe and this dude. In fact, based on playoff victories and head-to-head matchups, one could easily argue that Joe is better…and Rose…and Rondo.

  • lexluther703

    1) Lebron James
    2) Kobe Bryant
    3) Kevin Durant

And just to be clear, I like Brandon Roy. I just don’t think he’s #11. Not if JJ is #18 and Rondo is #17.

  • smooth

well bosh isnt the leader no more or dominant player of his team no more if he was on toronto he would still probly be in the twenties if he wasnt on the heat dont get me wrong bosh is a great player but he isnt better than roy

if that made any sense and after this nba season he would probly be in the top ten

@Kevin: BRoy Didn’t play well in his first first playoff appearance vs the Rockets??? I guess 26-5-3 on Artest and Battier isn’t good, not to mention Artest saying he’s the hardest player he’s ever had to guard (i know, i know, coming from ron artest, but…). Also, that it was Blazers first playoff appearance in how long? In his third season? Please. Also, coming back this playoffs 8 days after knee surgery? Bosh had a better year last year, and was a better leader for his team after checking out for the last quarter of a season? Then dipping out? Really? The only thing keeping BRoy out of the top ten the last season WAS his injuries, and not being able to get into the swing of things. He’s the (one of the) most well rounded player(s) in the league, no question.

  • The Philosopher

Big, big year from Roy this year, hopefully.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com CHICAGO SAID IT YUP

i like brandon roy game too BUT isnt it about time he starts to get some criticism for the blazers not winning a playoff series? Despite the injuries to oden that have become tradition they usuallu have prtty stacked teams, and he IS the leader

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

I agree with everyone saying Joe Johnson/Bosh/Rose are pretty interchangeable, but I don’t think it’s a travesty to have Roy this high. Brandon is a jack-of-all-trades master-of-none type dude who can do damage in the playoffs if his team is healthy. Trust me.
    Next up:
    10. Dirk

    8. Paul
    7. Williams
    6. Howard
    5. Melo
    4. Wade
    3. Kobe
    2. Lebron
    1. Durant <—- YES Durant is number one. Lebron is going to be sharing the scoring load, and Kobe is going to be playing less to save his body. Durant still has no legit scoring options outside of Westbrook on his team, so he’s going to be putting up POINTS. Statistically, and of value to his team, Durant is number one.
Even though he’s not better than Wade/Lebron/Kobe.
    That’s just how it is.

  • MUBWAR

what a foolish countdown…Roy is not even a top 15 player…Joe Johnson is much better…Slam needs to hire someone who lives NBA(like me) to write about this…As long as KingJames is numuro Uno im cool…

  • JTaylor21

mubwar, that’s a joke right? JJ is easily one of the most overrated players in the league today while BRoy is vastly underrated.

  • SpaceJam

Roy is very deserving of this spot. He can light it up, and to all of you saying he should avg 25+ ppg, that would be the case if he didn’t play for a halfcourt offense. They rarely run the ball so that takes away easy buckets from him. He is one of the most clutch players in the league. You give the Blazers some more tempo and a fully healthy season and they would make it out of the 1st round against most teams.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think he pouted to much when they brought in Andre Miller.
    That is all.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And I agree with Bryan Crawford of Roy’s athletic ability.
Is he that much more athletic than Joe Johnson?
I like Roy, but he dominates the ball a little too much, and I’m not sure if the team can be truly great with him making all the decisions.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Taylor
    Joe Johnson ain’t overrated.
    He’s overpaid. Big difference.

  • Elvis Freshly

Somebody please explain to me why you think KD is ahead of Carmelo. Please, somebody with knowledge and not just a Kevin homer.
