Kemba Walker Fails to Score 30, Gets Triple-Double Instead

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

Coming into Friday’s game against UMBC, Kemba Walker had scored at least 29 points in five straight games. With the winless Retrievers coming to town, speculation was rampant about just how many points Walker could score.

Walker, though, managed just 24 points, but with 13 rebounds and 10 assists to go along with those points, Walker became the eighth player in school history to record a triple-double.

It was the first triple-double since Hasheem Thabeet had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks against Providence in 2009. Walker’s 24 points are the most of any of those eight players with a triple-double.

No. 7 Connecticut probably didn’t need a performance like that from Walker to blow past UMBC 94-61, but it’s little surprise to anyone that he accomplished another incredible feat. In a season where Walker has become the early leader for National Player of The Year, each game has become a must-see spectacle.

From The Day.com:

Coach Jim Calhoun praised Walker for unselfishly looking for his teammates.

“When you see a guy averaging 30 points a game pass up on layups to give other people shots, I know everyone is praising Kemba, but he’s deserving of that praise,” Calhoun said. “He’s capable of so many different things. … He created for his teammates and also created for himself.”

Calhoun recognizes that there is going to be a night when Walker doesn’t have his scoring touch. That’s why he is so thrilled with a game like this — a game where Walker builds the confidence of his teammates. He most likely will not average 30 ppg, and when Connecticut is at its best this year, it will not need him to.

    Shout out to Ed Saunders.

dude has by far out-lived what little expectations i had for him.. i didnt figure at first that he would even get drafted but hell the way he is playing right now he would be a top 10 pick for sure

Kemba has been off the charts this season. I remember that game last year at MSG where he battled John Wall and UK, I was impressed then, not just by Wall, but I didn’t think coming into this season that he would be this good. Def. frontrunner for POY.
BTW Looking forward to UNC-UK (Barnes vs Knight). Although Barnes has been disappointing he’ll pick it up, he’s too good for his bad play to keep up.

Kemba Walker, I remember noticing his game last year but didn’t think he was that special. Dude is sure making noise now. I don’t understand how he’s not ranked higher in mock drafts. His stock should be rising.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@niQ, his stock should rise, not by that much as you think though, he’s been playing great ball, but remember Steph Curry’s last year at college, dude was dropping 40 point games and was dominating, scoring wise, but to scouts he wass still an undersized SG. Now steph was lucky, because he’s 6’3 and a good passer. Kemba Walker is 6’1, and yes he dropped a triple double but he’s a scorer and being a SG at 6’1 is going to be very tough in the NBA for him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I would say impossible, but Adidas tells me other wise, I’m a Nike guy but still… :P

  • Young C

He dropped “Just” 24 Points lol.

I’ve found the perfect comparison. Kemba Walker is what Jameer Nelson was during his last year at St. Joes

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@cantrell……what does being black really have to do with anything???…..anyways

  • http://slamonline.com Jeremy Bauman

Kemba Walker is not just a scoring guard. He can make plays for his teammates and while his passing can improve, his ability to get past the defense, get into the lane, and make something positive happen are few and far between. Combined with his much-improved jumper, Kemba could be a lottery pick in Juner

  • Miamijoker

^ the nerve did it again

  • Galagu

kemba is killing it…too bad i couldn’t afford to watch any of those maui invitational games despite being right near it…lucky rich peeeeeps….majority of the crowd is made up the alumni of the teams visiting :( where’s the local love! lol

    I LOVE the College Wire.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Crawfid would say whats so special about a triple double? Ive seen it done lots of times, many by a very nonspecial player from ohio. Anyways, ……….

  • tRay

^^LOL he would and the nerve all I gotta say is GEEEET EMMMMMMM!!!!(Method Man voice) lol

  • http://yahoo.com Big O.

@Jeremy, Kemba Walker is most definately a top 10 pick if he finishes the year the way started. He has all the tools to be an elite guard at the next level:ability to run a team and make others around him better, can be an elite defender, has blow by speed to beat him man off the dribble, decent jump shot and good athletism overall.
