Top 50: Dwight Howard, no. 5

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players for ’12-13.

by Nima Zarrabi / @NZbeFree

Of all the stories that circulated during Dwight Howard’s struggle to flee Orlando last year, the tale of the candies and his ETO top my list.

As he was praying and fasting in March over the difficult decision on whether or not to return to Orlando, Dwight was met by Magic CEO Alex Martins, who hoped to persuade the franchise star to remain with the team. Martins had brought all of Dwight’s favorite candies and foods to help his cause, but the big man could not indulge.

The tale was a classic and Martins eventually received the answer he was looking for as Howard waived his early termination option and committed to a return to the Magic for the ‘12-13 season, citing loyalty as a big part of his decision. It would not last and you know the rest—Dwight didn’t get the trade to Brooklyn that he wanted and ended up West, now starring for the Lake Show in what he describes as “a blessing in disguise.”

And after being caught up in one of the most negative storylines of the season last year, Howard has flipped the script with his purple and gold jersey and trademark smile.

We all know what to expect from Dwight on the court and that is why he checks in at No. 5 on our list. Even with all of the negativity surrounding him last year, Howard produced his standard issue 20 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks, earning the best center in the game All-NBA First-Team honors.

In two pre-season games with the Lakers this year, he has looked good on the defensive end and shined in some nice P&R sets with PG Steve Nash. They struggled in the preseason (0-8), as the team adjusted to a new offense and roster. The Lakers players say their pre-season losses are nothing to worry about and the team will be ready to go once the regular season tips off.

If attention is what Dwight lusted for during his opt-out bonanza last year, he will have access to copious amounts here. The Lakers new network—Time Warner Sportsnet—will be catered to him like no other player. In addition to showcasing his play on the hardwood, the network will tap into his unique personality, allowing him to act out all of his comedic talents for the world. During his Lakers debut, the Time Warner cameras focused on Howard for enough time prior to tip to see him get a pound from Lisa Estrada and then ball up the plastic he dusts his sneakers on at halfcourt, shooting it into the crowd as if it were a fadeway jumper.

During an episode of Backstage, a show on the network that will give fans a behind-the-scenes perspective, Howard was shown getting a tour of the Lakers facility and offices for the first time. In one scene, Howard is in GM Mitch Kupchak’s office and looks on to the Lakers’ practice court through a window, in awe of the retired jerseys of Lakers legends. Kupchak smiles and tells Dwight that he wants his jersey up there in 10 years (that’s two more contracts, BTW).

That, of course, will be a storyline for Howard this season—will Dwight re-sign with the Lakers?—along with many others. Just yesterday, the L.A. Times ran a story with the headline, “Will Dwight Howard get along with Kobe Bryant?”

Yeah, it’s going to be a fun year, that’s for sure.

So when D-Rose is 100% percent healthy, he’s 100% ready to go right?
    NO.
It takes allot of time to get back to where you were after surgery.
Kobe didn’t have surgery during the off season, Howard did. The editors/writers took that into account when making this list and they opted to say Kobe would have a better season than Dwight.
Knowing that Howard was not going to start the season 100%.
I personally would have still placed Kobe lower than Dwight, but I can’t fault the writers for not knowing if Dwight was going to start the season or not.

  • LakeShow

9-8-2 in his 2nd… yup limited

  • http://SLAMonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

No. 4 will be revealed on Monday. Let the anticipation build!

  • Kobe Fan

even Kobe fans have to be shocked that either 1) Kobe is in the top 5, or 2) he’s not on this list

  • LakeShow

You tend to forget about Kobe.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

where did i ever say Dwight was back to where he was as a player? I said, he is 100% healthy. he is, 100% healthy. He doesn’t have a hurt back, as you said in response to “you think he isn’t? you think he’s putting up 14 10 and 3 in 28 minutes in preseason with a hurt back. you are dumb as hell if you think that.”
    .
    - “Consider me dumb as hell then man”

    .
If there were any risks to Dwight’s health, if he was anything less than 100% physically, the Lakers would not risk further injury. Again, to argue that, is stupid. — And the only thing surgery does is keeps a player from playing and staying in shape. Just like hurting a portion of your leg does. Missing time is missing time. right now, Dwight isn’t missing any time, Kobe is.

  • LakeShow

In N’ Out is calling me gents.
    Grease burger goodness…

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You tend to forget about reason when talking about Kobe or the Lakers.

  • booo

Nooo- you are sooo wrong – you should eat some poo!

  • booo

Ryne is actually lying, it will be on thursday – i mean how can you trust a guy whose parents can’t spell Ryan???

  • booo

    yes xxx

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Go away kid. Grown people are talking.

  • Peter Walsh

    damn, be easy.

  • Rainman

First , this is a wrong placement, that goes withotu saying. Dwight is better than top 5. But all this write up did was talk about the Dwightmare and his thought process, and almost nothing about the individual player himself…

  • Rainman

    haha

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what’d you expect me to say? i’ve always been honest about what i perceive to be going on around here.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

really? man you are a piece of work.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

awesome, i’m happy y’all aren’t puttin up the top spots during the weekend this year.

  • 23

Just curious, would you be ok if Dwight was ahead of Durant??

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

as a projection? yeah, i would have. I don’t personally have it that way, but if they projected it i wouldn’t make a fuss. Dwight’s impact on the Lakers is going to be huge. He is no longer playing in Stan Van’s system that uses him more as a decoy than anything, and with the Los Angeles bright lights, his true value is going to be covered to a ridiculous extent. I actually have Dwight as the 2nd favorite for MVP even as the 3rd best player in the league because of the Los Angeles effect. — i do have a fuss with them putting him behind Kobe though. I really wouldn’t have said anything if Dwight was 4, as I can see the projection for Chris Paul. But behind Kobe? Like, defense is completely irrelevant then? Only scoring points, that’s what matters? Even if the difference in 6-10 points between the 2 will be separated by almost 20%!!!!! from the field….there really is just no justifying putting Kobe over Dwight.

  • http://twitter.com/Quis_Da_Realist Marquise Hall

Man this is solid ranking, but i think carmelo anthony should be at least 4-7 on the list, but melo will make everyone believers this year when he goes to the eastern conference finals.

  • bravo

kobe will be number 4! and he should be! this is correct ! he will be a killer elite this season!

    YAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • LakeShow

That’s everyone’s problem with Melo. He’s at best a Confererence Finals player. He will NEVER be in the Finals as the main dude on his team.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

Clearly better than Dwight – Lebron, Durant.
Probably better than Dwight – Paul.
#3 or #4 seems about right. #5 feels like bigs are being undervalued this season.

  • 23

I hear you. But in my eyes Durant has earned my respect moreso than Dwight. But realistically, Dwight should have the best season of everybody, considering other than maybe bynum, Dwight should run through every single center in the league

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

yes. Lebron is clearly on another level. Paul, Durant, and Dwight are alone on the tier below him. Kobe shouldn’t be top 4. Heck, he hasn’t been better than Wade for about 3 years now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

he’s not going to have a dip in his scoring numbers. This is the first time he’s played with more than one player who knows how to throw an entry pass. He’d get his 21 off high-low feeds from Gasol and offensive rebounds.

  • rkirby

The fact that Dwight Howard, an 8 year vet, could get plays run for him outside of alley-oops in Orlando tells me all I need to know about his ranking. Great help defender and rebounder, little else.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    If only that were true

  • greg

You guys fail to realize that people thought Dwight was gonna be a lot below full strength on opening night when they made these rankings, so although it’s incorrect, it dies make sense

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

I still think he’s too low despite the injury. Two of the 4 players above him have more pressiing injury issues.

  • Caboose

Slam, this is utter shite. Honestly, reevaluate who you have voting for this list because there is a CLEAR bias.

  • Caboose

Look at Dwight’s rankings (not counting this year): 5, 5, 6. Those have ALL BEEN WRONG. You’d think they’d learn. Sigh.

  • LakeShow

Like you would know anything about being a kobe fan Kobe Fan!

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

So people just screw around and get 20 points a game?

  • Bored

rondo is going to have a better season than kobe. so is melo and dwight and probably deron too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

I’m a huge Bryant fan but this is a horrible choice…Bean should be #5…Howard is the best player on the Lakers.

  • Showtime

34 old kobe is a top3 player still huh..lol,, slam does something asinine like this ever year..got to luv em

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

Kobe is too high….. No way he’s PROJECTED to be this high. Which NBA do you watch!

  • PB

Nice to know that Andrea Bargnani will be top four. :P

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

    Sacrificing babies for strength.

  • Drig

    OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!

  • Drig

    lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Bahaha

  • LakersTheBlog.com

Kobe always gets good treatment from Slam. Probably would’ve flipped Mamba Bean and Dwight, but it’s all good. Lebron by a country mile over KD for #1

  • Slick Ric

Slam does know this guy is the best player on the lakers right?

  • danpowers

1 james 2 durant 3 paul 4 howard 5 wade 6 bryant. that wouldve been an appropiate order

  • Slick Ric

…You fools saying MJ had no competition, don’t you know Great centers are more valuable to winning championships than any other position? Ewing, Robinson, Hakeem, Shaq, Alonzo was his competition. You ask for perimeter players? KJ, Tim hardaway, Penny, Grant hill, Stockton, Payton, Clyde Drexler, Reggie miller, Dominique Wilkins, mark price, steve smith. We already know about Barkley, Malone etc…

  • Ugh

Kobe: can shoot beyond 5 feet, can play on-ball defence, can hit free throws, can be relied upon in clutch, can coach all 5 positions albeit unpleasantly. Dwight can dunk, grab rebounds in the half-court and block off-ball weak side jumpers.

  • Yesse

I really can’t understand how Kobe got in the top 5.

He is old now and after this season, Dwight will probably be the star of Lakers.
