Top 50: Chris Paul, no. 3

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players for ’12-13.

by Lang Whitaker / @langwhitaker

About a year ago, the fine folks at Brand Jordan invited a mess of editors and writers out to a launch event for the Jordan 2012. We assembled in New Jersey at an airplane hangar, where a full-size basketball court had been put together complete with breakaway-rimmed glass backboards. (In case I dunked.)

To insure we gave the shoes a thorough workout, the Jordan folks brought in Idan Ravin, the trainer known as The Hoops Whisperer (also known as a SLAM columnist) who works with all the best athletes in the NBA. For about an hour, Idan put us through a terrifying workout, doing all sorts of stretches, sprints and jumps. After about 45 minutes, Idan broke out a sack of tennis balls, and he introduced us to a drill that involved having your partner roll a ball away from you, and then you had to basically fetch the ball.

This was a real workout, and these were real drills. By this point I was seriously sucking wind, and it was taking all of my will not to go over to the corner of the court and vomit into a trash can. And so just as I swallowed back my breakfast, my partner rolled a ball through my legs, and I spun and, admittedly half-heartedly, ran after the ball. Idan spotted me and, perhaps sensing a teaching moment, trotted over and got in my ear to try and help fire me up.

“Come on, Lang,” he said. “Get after it. You can do this. This is Chris Paul’s favorite drill.”

I grabbed my hamstrings and, lost in that moment, thought to myself, “Man, I hate Chris Paul.”

I’m pretty sure I’m not the first person on a basketball court to feel enmity toward Chris Paul; if anybody hates Chris, it’s because dude makes a habit out of destroying his opposition. Way, way, way back in 2008, Ryne Nelson and I got into a fake argument in the pages of SLAM and (right here on SLAMonline) about which point guard was better, Deron Williams or Chris Paul. Not long after that issue dropped, Paul would go on that season to lead the NBA in assists per game (11) and steals per game (2.8). But the Hornets lost in the first round of the Playoffs, to Denver, and a year later the Hornets pink-slipped Byron Scott, and then Paul got injured and missed half the season, and then guys like Derrick Rose and John Wall started coming up, and pretty quickly, Chris Paul’s name started to slip from the point guard convo.

The injury and playing in New Orleans seemed to keep Chris out of spotlight. It really wasn’t until almost a year later, when CP3 hung 33, 14, 7 and 4 on the Lakers in L.A. to open the 2011 Playoffs, that everyone kind of remembered, “Oh, yeah, that guy’s pretty good.”

He can score, he has a dead-eye mid-range game, he’s an incredible defender (he’s led the NBA in steals in four of his seven seasons), he commands respect and demands respect (ask Pau Gasol), and nobody in the NBA is better at running a team. I’ve been around the NBA for almost a dozen years now, and CP3 is one of my favorite people I’ve covered. He’s a solid guy, who values family and relationships, who looks you in the eye when he speaks to you. He’s the kind of guy who, if he wants it, could have a career in politics when he retires. Then again, retirement is a ways away: CP3 is still three years shy of 30.

That stuff aside, what is so impressive to me about Chris Paul is that he excels against the best players in the world without being the best athlete at his position. Sure, he’s an elite athlete, but he’s not transcendent like LeBron or even a Westbrook. Chris once told me that he knows he’s not the fastest guy in the NBA, but that what he does have is quickness, so he tries to take advantage of that quickness by stopping and starting, and changing speeds when defenders least expect it.

He is not tall, he is not unbelievably strong, but what really sets him apart is that more than anything else, and maybe more than anyone else, he just hates to lose. And so he works his ass off to make the most of what he has. Chris Paul goes that extra mile, way past where the rest of us stop to go puke in the corner. He’s been an All-Star, he’s a two-time Gold medalist, he even made people believe in the Clippers. The only thing left is a ring.

And knowing CP3, when he puts his mind to, there’s nothing he can’t do.

    Derrick Rose spot!

    hell yeah!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

3?! not saying he doesnt deserve it, just a lil surprised & i aint mad at the spot

  • justin05

Durant and Lebron are next. Can’t wait for the season to begin!

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Wasn’t expecting two players today. I like this spot. Expecting an MVP worthy season from Chris. Especially once Chauncey Billups returns. Clippers will challenge the Lakers and Thunder for the top spot in the West.

  • justin05

Never. CP3 knows how to win and keep himself healthy.

  • eh…what

A lot of humblebragging going on here

  • blalalala

i’d take rondo any day and rondo has more of a chance of winning a ring this year

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You say that as if guys have control over whether they get hurt or not. D-Rose got hurt on a play that he has made hundreds of times. Chris has also had some injuries. Knee surgery, thumb surgery, etc. He’s a better PG than Rose in my opinion, but there’s a better argument to make for it instead of the one you made. The winning argument can’t be made obviously because Rose led his team to the best record in the league 2 seasons in a row and got them to the ECF two seasons ago (people will point out the Bulls record last season with him out but they forget about the 32-7 record they had when he played).

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Great job Lang.

  • zogs19994

    KOBE’S BETTER

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

*FIXED* Eddy Curry and Adam Morrison

  • LakeShow

Love this guys game. AS much as I LOVE Nash, this guy should have been in a Lakers uni, but ya move on. He is very deserving of this position. You could argue him as a top 3 talent for the last 5+ years.

  • Feez_22

Chris paul is #3 because the clippers, a team with both the worst coach and worst owner in the NBA, are EXPECTED to be a playoff team and quite possibly a semi-contender this year. That is all there is to it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    cosign.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if only Derrick Rose could even run right now, still prolly not tho.

  • Dagger

Apart from using “insure” instead of “ensure” in the first sentence (sorry), this is one of my favourite writeups. Great player; great spot.

  • justin05

I just said never b/c saying that’s Rose’s spot is disrespectful to Chris. Paul is a much better pg in my opinion because of his ability to make other players better and because he doesn’t have to throw his body around to make baskets. Let us not forget why Rose is injured in the first place…

  • justin05

Because he jumped too high lol. The Bulls had the game wrapped up so he hurt himself for no reason. Just trying to make a nice play..

  • justin05

The win part was just a testament to CP, no disrespect to Rose. I always have more respect for players who avoid long term injuries. You’re not playing the game right if you throw your body around all the time. You’re delusional if you think you can play that way for long and have no side effects.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Again, Rose got hurt on a drive to the basket that he makes all the time. No one touched him. It was a freak injury.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Not playing the game right if you throw your body around all the time? So D-Wade and Iverson didn’t play right because they were aggressive going to the basket and took a lot of hard falls?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Yes, guys shouldn’t jump too high because they’ll hurt themselves. Nevermind the fact that he was most likely going to throw up that floater that he rarely misses before his ACL tore. No more floaters because he might hurt himself. Can’t play the game scared. Freak incident that could have happened to anyone else on any other routine play. It’s the playoffs. You play until the game is over to send a message especially in Game 1. Teams have come back in wild ways before.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Chris Paul is number 3 because he’s widely thought of as being the best PG in the league and because with a team as talented and deep as the Clippers, he is capable of carrying them far into the playoffs. That is all there is to it. And he can do it with any coach on that sideline and any owner sitting in the stands.

  • J

“He hurt himself for no reason,”
Wow, you’re one to talk about disrespect

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Even at 100%, Rose is behind LeBron, Durant, CP3, Howard, Kobe and Wade at this point. He’ll be top 5 in a few seasons though if he comes back with 95% of the explosiveness he had before the injury/surgery.

  • RedDragon10

He’s a great player and everything, but how is it that I am the first one to mention how he’s easily a top 5 flopper in the league?

  • mike

just think, The lakers , had they traded gasol for paul, and still gotten dwight this year- would have had 3 of the top 5 players on the same team. its not that far out of the realm of possibility to have happened. bullshit .

  • The Seed

How in the HELL is CP3 top 3 in the NBA. You can argue a healthy Rose, Westbrook and Williams are better point guards and will do more for their teams this year. CP3 has been overrated for a long time. Clippers went WHERE, HE DID WHAT LAST SEASON, Actually the fake big shot Billups was more important to the Clippers season. Also Bledsoe could start for the CLippers and would only do about 6 wins less than with CP3. Really look at CP3′s career, I can think of two years where I felt he went Bonkers, beside that he has been passed. When CP3 chokes and gets hurt again. I TOLD YOU SO SLAM. What is America coming too. You put Westbrook on Clippers he could win an MVP award. Slam is funny.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

    Not even better than Rondo.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

    2012 playoffs averages

    Player A: 17.6 points 7.9 assists 2.7 steals 5 rebounds 42% shooting

    Player B: 17.3 points 11.9 assists 2.5 steals 7 rebounds 47% shooting

Player A was Chris Paul, swept in second round by Spurs

Player B was Rondo, lost in 7 to eventual champion Heat, led series 3-2 at one point

Please keep telling me how overrated Rondo is.

Paul better than Rondo is laughable.

  • justin05

You right J. 100% my bad. He should be more careful, I just lose respect for guys who get the “freak” injuries. I shouldn’t hate so much on the guy tho, still idolize him as one of the best.

  • justin05

I understand the send a message part but you have to be in a lot of control of your body when you play. Guys like Wade and Iverson can/could do it for a longer period of time. They were smarter bball players in my opinion. Rose was amazing the season before the injuries started taking effect but he couldn’t keep it going..

  • TR

CP3 is getting about triple the hate I thought he would. I think hes kinda put himself in a category all his own as far as PGs go. After him I have D-Will then Rondo and Westbrook too, even TP. All 5 of these guys are incredible players, but CP3 puts it all together just a little bit better than everyone else. I’m sure using numbers and stats people could argue someone else should be in this spot, but from watching the game I think CP3 is the best PG right now.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

There was nothing he could have done to control that moment. He just planted his leg onto the floor and his ACL tore. Iverson was fortunate to not have a major injury. D-Wade messed up his shoulder on a routine reach for the ball in 07. Injuries like that just happen. No way to prevent it other than not being aggressive. Rose is strengthening his body so that he can take more. He’s also improving his balance. But if we’re talking about body control, the layups that he makes on the regular shows that he has a lot of it. He was just unfortunate all season long with the injuries and the last one was a bad one.

  • The Seed

Ask yourself would you trade Rondo, Rose, Westbrook or Williams for CP3. LOL

  • Conor

He’s taken the PG mantle from Nash, but he’ll need to prove why he’s earned it throughout this season. That will be one of the best battles of the season.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

So the regular season doesn’t count? Maybe if Rondo put up CP3 numbers during the year the Celtics would had home court advantage and played Game seven at home.

  • MeloMan2012

Honestly think this guy is the most overrated player in the league. I really love his game, but what has he really done to give him the title. He doesn’t score better than rose, doesn’t pass better then rondo, doesn’t shoot better than dwill… I mean he’s very good but why is he so widely considered the best when there are so many other players who have done just as much, if not more

  • Lan

The description reminds me of a Former Piston named Isiah Thomas.

  • manu

so wait… hasn’t made it out of the 2nd round, has no major awards, doesn’t have a single win against Derrick Rose, gets eaten up every time he plays Deron Williams, just got swept and dummied by Tony Parker

this guy is #3? ahahahahahah gimme a break

  • http://www.facebook.com/Bishop.SeanMagicJuan Sean MagicJuan

What are you talking about? The top ” PG stat” is assists, who was the league leader in assists in the REGULAR SEASON last year?

  • The Fury

Tony Parker owns this guy. Actually he is faster than CP3 I think.

  • infrared

tbh he’s not even the most overrated player on his team :P i would say that his shooting abillity is around the same as dwill, he doesnt score as well as rose because he doesnt need to carry the offensive load for his team and he’s a great paser, it’s just that rondo’s passing skills are more entertaining to watch. just saying although he’s a bit overrated i guess some ppl think he’s the best because he’s a well rounded pg and he actually helps his team win games. like he had next to no-one on the hornets apart from david west but he managed to win 2 games against the lakers in the 201-2011 playoffs pretty much by himself

  • Bored

    nah

  • Bored

    do you watch him play?

has everyone just stopped correcting people like this @0c6c1e85f9e2abc77683e4e4dd41bbf7:disqus ?

  • RKJ92

I wouldn’t even think twice about trading Rose, Westbrook, or Williams for CP3 that part is laughable because CP3 is seriously on another level then those 3 players.. now Rondo on the other hand… that’s a toss up for me but i’d give the edge to CP3 alone for overall skill translated into better shot selection, heads to the FT line more, able to draw more fouls from the opposing team, often commands double teams which he feeds off of through amazing passing ability.. I mean Rondo is amazing but he’s just lacking certain traits, that if he possessed would bring him to that level CP3 is on.

  • RKJ92

we don’t bother because they’re comments are laughable, we just look at them as morons, and continue to comment on real posts lol

  • Bored

    probably not

do you know what this list is for?

    dumb dumb. sorry dude haha

    seriously?

ahh i see. ok, well then sorry for the last 3 replies I did to similar comments.

there is nothing wrong with the way Rose gets to the ring.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that doesn’t dictate whose better. no.

  • manu

    moron right?

yeah so ill just sit at home and watch tv late into the playoffs every year while chris paul does the same

  • Omar

He should have Kobe’s MVP, but that’s besides the point you were making, I guess.

  • RKJ92

    “moron right?

yeah so ill just sit at home and watch tv late into the playoffs every year while chris paul does the same”

    - Manu

Do you see what I mean? @disqus_QO13hGIgUj:disqus he wont acknowledge Chris Paul as a player nor will he put up a valid arguement why CP3 doesn’t deserve the 3rd spot other then trying to belittle his abilities as a player which any actual hoophead would scoff at considering how good Chris Paul actually is, he also legitimately thinks Derrick Rose, Deron Williams, and Tony Parker are better LOL that’s why we typically wont respond to idiots like this, they have a biast opinion with no clue what they’re talking about.

  • LakeShow

I take it you really really over value José Calderón.

  • RKJ92

If seriously to me? then yes… I’d love to see an argument to prove me wrong, because i’m pretty sure the general basketball public would agree with what I had said.. if seriously to the seed? well he suffers from brain shrinkage ;)

  • Rainman

    yah

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

You believe that the top stat is simple assists? So John Stockton was better than Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas in their primes? Because he was the league leader in assists multiple times during their primes.
    Stop being silly pimp.

  • Datkid

I had no idea people were so ignorant about how raw CP3 actually is lmaoooo

  • Bored

haha I was wondering if he was going to reply to our comments and then he comes out with that! haha unbelievable! but enough laughing at fools we should probably get back to talking about Basketball.

  • Bored

    haha

  • Bored

yeah, dont you know that each position on the court has a top stat? duh! (sarcasm)

  • Bored

yeah he suffers from severe brain shrinkage.

  • Ugh

I’ve been watching some Paul film lately, and I don’t know if he’s actually better than Tim Hardaway, let alone as good as Zeke. Made me wonder how diluted the NBA is right now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

I do agree Rondo doesn’t always show up. But I’ll take a guy who steps up big in the playoffs who takes a few games off in the season. And in the regular season he averaged way more assists. Not the “Top PG Stat” like Sean said, I ain’t a stats guy, watch the games and you can see who does the most. But his extremely high assist numbers ery year do say something. Dude’s the best passer in the L. One of the best over. In 2 years SLAM’s list will read 1 Lebron – 2 Durant – 3 Rondo – 4 Howard. Not 100 percent sure of the order but I am of the players. Heard it here first. Right now, Kobe > Dwight. But 2 years more only.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

You will see. Watching Rondo play tonight was beautiful. Absolutely love the man’s game. Wilbon said it on PTI. Starting the season, the PG leader is Rondo. As it was in the playoffs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

20 -13-7. The way he passes, runs the floor, uses his body. Sorry man, come back at me when CP3 posts 20-13-7. He will occasionally, but Rondo will regularly. He’s clearly the leader of the class in terms of PG’s. Only biased CP3 fans and people who don’t watch and or don’t understand basketball think otherwise.

  • Max

    You sir, are an idiot.

  • Max

    NO

  • Max

    NO.

  • Guitoz

Great player, very entertaining to watch, but a bit overrated. He never passed the 2nd round of the playoffs (and the sweep against the Spurs last year means a lot), can’t be a top 3 player right now, sorry.

  • manu

wow ur an idiot…totally brainwashed dumba**

Tony Parker has a Finals MVP u disrespectful dip**** not to mention 3 rings

Derrick Rose is the MVP of the league when healthy

Deron Williams has a lost a grand total of 4 out of 20 something games head to head against paul….deron is on another level when he has support around him…in utah he was in the conference finals while chris paul was losing by 50 to the denver nuggets

  • manu

    of course he should

when LA was the #1 seed in the West and Kobe put up better numbers….of course chris paul should have it

  • pposse

you are ignorance personified @manu gave u enough reasons, and we are still waiting for a rebuttal. tick tock tick tock

  • pposse

people think paul is the best because imo he is the smallest guy/ the ultimate underdog. Fact of the matter is, he is simply not a better overall player than any of the guys you mentioned in your post.

  • pposse

shuuut up! do u not realize that if d rose was healthy he would be starting in the olympics over cp3 right? or are you this dillusional? Every knowledgeable person about bball will tell you this is a fact, but you guys on here swear by cp3..please get over this man crush, he’s aiight but he is not the best. Wake up, its not 2008 anymore!

  • pposse

    whose a better BASKETBALL player?

  • RKJ92

Andddd Chris Paul is the best point guard in the NBA so whats your point!? LOL all that stuff means nothing when individually Chris Paul is absolutely on another level then the 3 afformentioned point guards, that’s what makes your arguement bunk no matter WHAT you try to say it would be completely irrelevant!

  • manu

what is this level u speak of?

i see tony parker outperform him and dominate him in the playoffs, i see him get statistically owned by derrick rose and lose to derrick rose every single time they play head to head and lose every time he plays deron williams

  • manu

    individually?

    rose – better scorer
    rose – better rebounder
    rose – more clutch
    rose – faster
    rose – better handles

there is not a single thing on earth that paul does better than rose besides 3 pt % ….o yeah and flop like a b**** too

  • manu

i love how people try to bash me when they can’t even back it up

please I’m still waiting for reasons why chris paul is winless against rose, pretty much winless against deron williams, just got swept by tony parker, and hasn’t got past the 2nd round

im also waiting for reasons why chris paul is on this imaginary level individually when the fact is D-Rose is better at nearly everything except passing, Deron Williams is better at every single thing, and Tony Parker is a Finals MVP

  • RKJ92

Bro your actually a moron.. and anybody with half a brain of basketball knowledge would back me up EASY -.-

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

I’m going to laugh at you people who think you know basketball after every game. Game 1.

Player A – 20-13-7 on 70% against the Miami Heat.
    Player B – 12-12-4 on 40% against the Grizzlies.

Player A is a top 4 player in this league.
Player B is a top 7 player in this league.

I will be back after their second games.

True but keep in mind he was hobbled in that Spurs series. If he wasn’t they might have had a better chance.

Conley and Allen. is it meant to be easy playing against those guys? also do you watch NBA games or box scores?

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Lmao Conley and Allen. Wade and LeBron. I watch games. I’ve been laughing at all the stats mongrels on SLAM. Did you watch their first games? I doubt it. CP3 ain’t on Rondo’s level, boy.

  • Bored

i dont know why im replying again because its pointless. you obviously have no idea why I think you are idiot. somehow you got the impression I was comparing Conley and Allen to Wade and Bosh. i think you have a problem comprehending what you read, like when you attempted to negate the CP3 ranking based on last seasons playoffs. but im going to tell you what the list is for, just as long as you do me one favour. just give up on replying to me. “rankings are based solely on projected ’12-13 performance”. that is a direct quote in the notes which is written under the list of players that were selected by a bunch of people.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

… And Rondo’s performance will be better. Like last years playoffs. ‘Cause he’s a better player who takes in to another level when it counts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

18 and 14 for Rondo. Again. Come back to me when CP3 can put up numbers like that consistently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Rondo 20 dimes. He’s just so much better than everyone in the L at passing. It’s not even close. The only one’s like him are JKidd and Magic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Rondo has the mantle. 20 dimes dropper. Arguably the greatest passer of all time. Champion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

CP3 is a JOKE. 2/14? Lmao. Westbrook made him look silly. BTW, Rondo? 22 and 15? 35 straight 10 assist games? It’s okay boy, you don’t have to admit how little you know, it’s obvious.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

What happened to CP3 little man? 2/14? How ’bout Rondo eh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

    LMAO

  • Bored

i dont care anymore dude. try convince someone else about how Rondo is better than CP3.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

lol, good good. Most people don’t need convincing. It’s rather clear IF YOU WATCH BASKETBALL.
