Trade Deadline 2011 Redux

by Ryne Nelson

With the little energy left in my fingers, I will attempt to recap the final hour of today’s NBA trade deadline.

Combined with the Carmelo Decision, Deron Williams mega deal, Mike Bibby trade and BDiddy excommunication to Cleveland, it’s safe to say we just experienced the most active trade deadline in recent NBA history. All of which could be taken as further evidence of the strong likelihood of a lockout this summer.

But there’s no time like the present, and we’ll be talking more about labor stoppages once the weather warms up and we’re wearing shorts in the SLAM Dome. For now, here’s what you missed if you blinked this afternoon:

The Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson to Thunder for Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic. Easily today’s most active franchise, Boston then traded Semih Erden, Luke Harangody to Cavs for a second-round pick. The Celtics’ dealings leave its froncourt significantly thinned (not literally, word to Shaq), but thanks to a Marquis Daniels trade to the Kings for cash, another best-selling jersey may be coming to Boston in the near future. Oh, and rumor has it Rasheed Wallace may be on his way back to Boston, too. Stay tuned!

Rockets traded Shane Battier to Grizzlies for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick. Houston wasn’t finished, though. The Rockets traded Aaron Brooks to the Suns for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick in a PG swap that won’t propel either team to the Playoffs in the near future.

Then came Michael Jordan’s Bobcats. First, the Bobcats traded Nazr Mohammed to the Thunder for DJ White, Mo Peterson. But the headliner came soon thereafter. By trading Gerald Wallace to the Blazers for Joel Przybilla and two first-round picks, the Cats effectively removed themselves from Playoff contention. Looks like the Brandon Roy era is as good as over.

Oh, and one more thing. The Grizzlies nearly traded OJ Mayo to the Pacers for Josh McRoberts and a first-round pick. The Hornets could’ve been involved, but just like the other hearsay — the Grizzlies pulled out last-second; the 3 p.m. buzzer already sounded — we’ll never know. Pacer fans are breathing a sigh of relief, but faith in Larry Bird seems to be almost lost.

    I HATE THE NBA.

So you would take Kareem over Wilt and Russell? I mean if you had a pick in an all time draft to build a team , you got Kareem over those guys?

  • Vin

NO REALLY I HATE THE NBA!

  • JTaylor21

I love Magic and Larry but no way both guys are better than Kareem. All there were great offensive players but Kareem has them beat by a mile on the defensive end. People need to understand that dude was a dominant player from ’69-’86, that 17 straight years of being the best player at the center position. No other player in history dominated for a longer period of time than Kareem, it’s a shame that so many people underrate him.

  • JTaylor21

    *all three

I was one of Perks biggest fans, until he went down last season, and I realized how little time he has left. If any of you people out there followed this guy, you would realize that they got about as much out of him as possible, and now he is about done. He came into the league straight out of high school. Overweight and raw skilled. He never developed an offensive game, but was good at learning how to use his body to defend the low post. Now, after years of shoulder and now knee injuries. The big guy has now played several years and is staring at the downside of Ben Wallace.

Bulls gonna come up big. They will win this game! NAMBLA for life!!!

  • JTaylor21

Great night for the 5th beatle, damn going 1-18, John Starks would be proud.

  • takashi

the celtics can get troy murphy if he gets waived or add leon powe since he was waived or hopefully sheed comes back.

  • Michael

Didnt get to watch the game but 1-18? daaayumm

  • Michael

I guess Boozers lockdown D gave him trouble.

  • scoopfromthahoop

    return of the sheed?

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Well I wonder who gets blamed for this loss.
A few of you scoffed at me when I said I thought Chicago really looked like a contender.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

And my faith in the Heat is sort of wavering. They just can’t close games.

  • buzzjuice

I’m sorry, but how long do Shaq and JO need to rest, um, “soreness”? They sat out a couple weeks and just had the All-Star break, there really isn’t any excuse.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Also, I didn’t realize that Chandler fits in with Denver so well. Dude has tats. When him, Birdman, JR and Kenyon are all in, it’s like I’m watching an art museum.

  • JTaylor21

Jukai, who scoffed at you? I’ve always believed that the bulls were legit contenders and my reasons for that may be different from what others believe. Thibs has done a great job of implementing the exact same defensive principles that made Bos oh so good. Now I see why coaches are so important because on one side you had a great basketball mind in Thibs and on the other side you had Pacquiao’s chauffeur masquerading as an NBA head coach.

37-36 Denver at the half.. This is some really high octane scoring, folks.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I just realized… Al Harrington is reunited with his old Knick buddies. I’m always wondering if players are closer to the people they’ve played with before. Like, if two guys get traded together, are they the closest to each other on the new team, ie. have the best chemistry? Probably. Unless they hated each other before–then they’re trapped.

  • rob

well denver showed why they got the better end of the melo deal. theyre really deep now and dont have any ball stoppers on their team. the only thing now is fixing chemistry but i think their defence as a team has improved. chandler is a defensive upgrade over anthony who individually wasnt a bad defender but a terrible team defender. and the felton/ lawson duo looked good at the end of the game. they looked quick and made good decisions. and gallo will eventually still give them 15 and 6

BLUF…I will never understand the Celts getting rid of Perk. Intense, Mean Streak, Never back down Attitude, Wide Body, Will hand out those hard 1990′s type of fouls no one else wants give out. They will miss that! Jeff Green is nice role player but I just don’t see where he fits in. There must be more to Perks injury than we all know.

    Changed my mind.
Celtics got the better of this deal…

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

i think both the Celtics and the Thunder benefitted significantly from this deal. the Thunder get toughness, defense, some rebounding, and a nice firecracker off the bench. the Celtics get a very athletic guy who’s capable of playing either the three or the four and who can both stretch the floor and cover the other team’s best player. think of how well james posey worked for the Celtics in 08–isn’t Jeff Green sort of a far more athletic version? the Celtics definitely took a risk here, since they’re kind of assuming that Shaq will be healthy (he will be) and JO will be as well (not so sure). but people who look at this trade and think that the Celtics shot themselves in the foot aren’t looking at it closely or objectively.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

oh, and I think the C’s plan on signing Chris Johnson (the 6-11 guy who played for them last night). apparently he’s been tearing it up in the D-League, and he played well last night (3 blocks in 16 minutes). tough to judge him based on a year in the D-League and one NBA game, but who knows? he could be an impact player for the Celtics.

  • Alex

Look, Perks been injured. Green can guard the 3 or 4. Think about it. He can guard James (well, no one can really guard James) and he can guard Odom. They’re preparing themselves for now and the future. OKC on the other hand picked up the one player that makes them super dangerous. They needed an intimidating defensive presence that doesn’t need shots.

@jtaylor…Boston was one of the worst rebounding teams in league last year with Perk so the idea of him cancelling out some of those rebounds is overrated. Gasol, Odom are longer than him and more mobile which is the reason for all the offensive rebounds. Anyone who plays ball knows that mobile big guys always gets lots of offensive boards. He’s not a great rebounder anyways.

The reason they were one of the worst offensive rebounding teams, and still are is because they shoot one of the highest field goal percentages in the league. That kind of makes sense doesn’t it? Higher field goal, less offensive rebounds?
Hmm, think I might be on to something here.
I’m not saying he’s a great rebounder, but you dont give him enough credit. Best post defender in the L, gets great position to block out the other teams center and just straight works his ass off.
