Trade Deadline 2011 Redux

by Ryne Nelson

With the little energy left in my fingers, I will attempt to recap the final hour of today’s NBA trade deadline.

Combined with the Carmelo Decision, Deron Williams mega deal, Mike Bibby trade and BDiddy excommunication to Cleveland, it’s safe to say we just experienced the most active trade deadline in recent NBA history. All of which could be taken as further evidence of the strong likelihood of a lockout this summer.

But there’s no time like the present, and we’ll be talking more about labor stoppages once the weather warms up and we’re wearing shorts in the SLAM Dome. For now, here’s what you missed if you blinked this afternoon:

The Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson to Thunder for Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic. Easily today’s most active franchise, Boston then traded Semih Erden, Luke Harangody to Cavs for a second-round pick. The Celtics’ dealings leave its froncourt significantly thinned (not literally, word to Shaq), but thanks to a Marquis Daniels trade to the Kings for cash, another best-selling jersey may be coming to Boston in the near future. Oh, and rumor has it Rasheed Wallace may be on his way back to Boston, too. Stay tuned!

Rockets traded Shane Battier to Grizzlies for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick. Houston wasn’t finished, though. The Rockets traded Aaron Brooks to the Suns for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick in a PG swap that won’t propel either team to the Playoffs in the near future.

Then came Michael Jordan’s Bobcats. First, the Bobcats traded Nazr Mohammed to the Thunder for DJ White, Mo Peterson. But the headliner came soon thereafter. By trading Gerald Wallace to the Blazers for Joel Przybilla and two first-round picks, the Cats effectively removed themselves from Playoff contention. Looks like the Brandon Roy era is as good as over.

Oh, and one more thing. The Grizzlies nearly traded OJ Mayo to the Pacers for Josh McRoberts and a first-round pick. The Hornets could’ve been involved, but just like the other hearsay — the Grizzlies pulled out last-second; the 3 p.m. buzzer already sounded — we’ll never know. Pacer fans are breathing a sigh of relief, but faith in Larry Bird seems to be almost lost.

Baron Davis’ fat a** got what he deserved. Ate himself silly after all that money was invested in him. He was too worried about being a filmmaker and not worried enough about doing his real job properly. Have fun in Cleveland you fat pig!

@jtaylor…Boston was one of the worst rebounding teams in league last year with Perk so the idea of him cancelling out some of those rebounds is overrated. Gasol, Odom are longer than him and more mobile which is the reason for all the offensive rebounds. Anyone who plays ball knows that mobile big guys always gets lots of offensive boards. He’s not a great rebounder anyways.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Baron was actually starting to regain his former self. He was playing some solid basketball heading into All-Star weekend. It’s a shame Sterling did him like that.

  • Stillballin

I would love to see rashed Wallace go back to the celtics..

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I can’t help but question the logic of sending Semih and Luke away for a second round pick? Semih at least was contributing and was a good back-up C. I can’t understand the logic in moving him for such low value. The Perk move is okay, but Pierce is the youngest of the Big 3 so why get his replacement first? Perhaps he’ll retire sooner rather than later. If Wallace doesn’t come back, we are screwed with the first injury to our bigs.

  • bizz

@omphalos: Not to mention he and Ray have proved pretty durable.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Thunder can even start Ibaka at the 4 now, and bring Nazr off the bench.
    Westbrook-Sefolosha-Durant-Ibaka-Perkins.
    That is tight.

  • ripslam

If Ainge doesn’t sign Murphy or another big FA, heads are going to roll. Including his.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Celtics may call Chris Johnson from the D-League.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    7:08 wasn’t me.

  • the Dude

Celtics all the way. Perkins will miss the Celts more than the Celts miss him.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Not really a bad trade for the Celtics. Better for OKC.
Celtics got a little more versatile.
Pressure is on Glen Davis. He is on the spot, now. He is clutch, though. We’ll see.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah I had a feeling that wasn’t you, Eni. This is getting a little ridiculous.

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

    7:26pm wasn’t me.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Michael Jordan just tanked the Bobcats’ season. Wow.

  • DeeDre

@Enigmatic- Good move on the Bulls part. I don’t even think they need a scoring two guard like some people suggest as long as everyone takes care of their part defensively. They have good scorers already in Rose, Deng and Boozer so i think they’ll be ok. Think about it, the Bulls have absolutely no bad defensive players. Only thing that can hinder them is their lack of size when they play teams like Orlando, Boston. Hell ill even throw Miami in their because of Bosh

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

it’s actually pretty easy to tell who the real enigmatic is

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Now, they have someone to guard Carmelo Anthony in case they meet up in the Playoffs.
The more I think about it, this is a great move by the Celtics and OKC.
    Still better for OKC, though.

  • DeeDre

@Teddy- The Bobcats season was already tanked. He just set up the funeral

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

I like how the moment (IF) Murphy and Pryzbilla are bought out, the bidding war between the Celtics and Heat begin. And considering both can only offer the minimum, I’d say it’s about who can give the best head.
@Bryan: I do think the Knicks got a little worse this year, just in terms of running the D’Antoni offense with Billups and Carmelo with no practice, and a razor thin bench. I still think the trade was fantastic in the long run.

  • JTaylor21

The Philosopher, when did JGreen become a good defensive player?

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

@chicken: i don’t mean that Krstic is a Perkins level defender, but if he buys in (which Doc seemingly can get anyone to do), he’ll be at least adequate for the Celtics.

  • Drew

Thunder straight up got the steal of the draft and improved leaps and bounds by adding Perkins and Nate.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    JTaylor21:
    Daniels is better?

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

@DeeDre – I think Boozer is a bad defensive player.
He gets lucky off swipes at the ball every now and then but that’s about it.
    Korver is…meh. OK I guess.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    Our staff>your staff

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

No one on that team will be able to guard Anthony better that Jeff Green will.
And, he’ll get a few buckets in the process. Especially with Rondo running that show.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Yo, JTaylor, great game against Orlando yesterday. I checked the boxscores, you had 21 points and felt chippy enough to grab five rebounds too. If you learn to pass the damn rock, you’ll be good one day, bro!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

^Fo Sho! Good looking out, Ryne. I knew I shouldn’t have went to work today.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

And thanks for the shout out in Noyz a couple months back, Ben.

  • JTaylor21

Bulls-Heat game is already the best game of the season so far… On another note, I don’t understand how you guys keep letting this happen. Can someone stop me from being such a woman-hating, whiny weirdo?

  • JTaylor21

Jukai, I don’t like to brag but you know….. I know, I know.. I need to improve my passing but that’s the product of watching too much mamba.

  • http://slamonline.com davidR

    You can’t stop me!!! >:D

  • allenp

Igotta admit I don’t like soul but I am impressed with how well he is sourced up. As a fellow reporter it is fairly epic.

  • http://slamonline.com davidR

I will NOT be stopped you bastards!

  • http://slamonline.con Enigmatic

Bulls playing scared except for Noah, Rose, and Rose. Did you guys know Newt Gingrich was my god-father? His b-ball knowledge is better than most of yours. My mom looks like Lawrence Frank in a granny dress.

  • illadelph

    The Celtics are so stupid!!!!!!!!
I loved seeing Nate, Big Baby, and Shaq on the same team tho!

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Jukai, I’m surprised at you. They Knicks are significantly better now than they were a week ago. All season they’ve lacked leadership and Chauncey fills that and they also didn’t really have anyone who could create offense in the halfcourt and now we have 2 guys who can. The bench was always thin anyway, but the first five is actually really solid. Not saying that this particular three is better than the Heat, but I’ll take Fields/Douglas and Turiaf over Chalmers/Arroyo and Joel Anthony.

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

In America, we have this lil thing called freedom of speech! You guys are anti-American Constitution!

  • http://slamonline.com The Fresh Prince of Nsam

    Waoh!
As a Cs fan, I’ll miss Hulk, he was bringing 2 the team an aura of invinsibility that we don’t have anymore (remember the starting 5 of RR-RA-PP-KG-Hulk) did not loose a playoff series in 3 years.
Plus I tought this team was built 2 win it all this year, so why trade him now? We needed him 2 win that 18th title THIS YEAR!
Anyways I hope Ainge knows better than me (that’s his job and that everything goes ok THIS YEAR!)
And I’ll miss Nate 2, that was our Mascott there…

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Ok, my head is spinning here.
Hey Shaquille! You wanted to contribute to a winning team, well get off the DNP-CD list and start doing that. Cause these playoffs are gonna really shine a light on your degrading skillset. Time to play the last 25 games and get in a rhythm, dawg.
You can rest that “sore right leg” when you retire.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

hey ryne or whoemever can handle this, can we get an IP ban on that kid that’s posing as enigmatic and me? thanks

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Bryan: I don’t think they’re significantly worse, but I do think they got worse for this season. Billups is going to be hard pressed to just pick up the D’Antoni pick-and-roll-constant-dribble offense and I’ll be amazed if Amare and Melo can gel without a training camp. They lost a glue guy in Chandler and the floor is gonna be a lot more compact without those spot-up shooters.
On paper, the team is certainly better. But with 2/3rds of the season gone, I don’t think the team can bring it together for the playoffs. We’re probably going to have to wait until next season to see the tangible improvement.

  • JTaylor21

I just saw that Slam Top-500 issue and the only problem I had was with Kareem at #7, what kind of BS is that? Dude’s the greatest center of all-time, yet he’s ranked behind Russell and Wilt. Maybe he should have sold more shoes or appeared in commercials and he would have gotten MJ type love.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

JTaylor21: Yeah, I’d say six championships, six MVPS, two finals MVP (and probably deserving a third one), 19-years and the most points ever scored in the NBA, career averages of 27-11-4 and 2 and a half blocks, the most dominant player of the 70s… that should probably be #1. But we’ve seen from the last issue, SLAM doesn’t like him.
It’s sort of odd to not have Kareem at #1 if you think about it. Second most dominant next to Chamberlain, second most championships next to Russell, second most skilled center next to Olajuwon, he’s got the accolades that every other center has.
    But, c’est la vie.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

I disagree, not just because I’m a Knick fan either. The offense really isn’t that hard to pick up. Pick and roll is the first thing you’re ever taught in basketball and “hey you’re open shoot” is the easiest thing to teach. And Melo is a great enough player he can fit in anywhere. Plug him in and watch him work. We won last night with awful shooting from everyone and Amare fouled out, which would have never happened two weeks ago.

  • ripslam

@JTaylor: Kareem is not the best center of all time. Not even close.

  • buzzjuice

@Jukai: Second most, second most, second most, and he is somehow number one?

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Bryan: I’m of the believe that the poor shooting was cause of the new teammates and it will probably continue to some extent. But we’ll see. No reason to root against this squad, so I hope you’re right.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

buzzjuice: Well, when you’re the second best in every category and everyone is number one but four or five in every other category, you can occasionally achieve the #1 status. At least, that’s how I look at it. In my mind, if you rank Chamberlain as 1, Kareem comes two… and if you rank Russell at one, Kareem comes two… having Chamberlain one/two and Kareem three doesn’t make sense to me.
But the list was a culmination of several people’s opinions, so that’s why it looks like that.
